One thought on “Budweiser premieres Super Bowl XLVIII commercial — “A Hero’s Welcome” (video)

  1. I do not normally leave comments for things or weight into a topic, unless I have firsthand experience as I do in this case. I am a Veteran and a Beer geek. I do not drink Budweiser, because it’s not my style of beer. I like to think that if Budweiser put out something that I liked, I would have no problem ordering it. So I would like it to be understood that I try not to demonize Budweiser on the merits of their beer.

I do however take issue with them co-opting what is a private and very heart felt moment of when some returns from a deployment for a commercial to sell beer, or any item for that matter. I have experienced what it is like to come home from deployment while I was in the Navy, and the first thing I wanted to do when I got home, was to hug my wife, and go home and rest. A Burger on drive home was not uncommon.

I did not ever want to sit in a parade or take part in a commercial. Now maybe the young man in this Ad is OK with this, but to be honest I find it in poor taste. I understand that the commercial is saying that all those who serve in the military should be received well when they get home, and God knows I appreciate this sentiment and feel that it should be expressed to all those coming back from situations and experiences that will never be easily explained to those who will never truly know. But I think to use this type of moment to sell a product is in poor taste. When I see the young man’s expression as he looks at the Parade, I see someone who is over whelmed and tired.

I am a Beer Geek, and I have a degree in Marketing. While I do have dreams of starting my own firm to make Ads for craft beer, I understand that some subjects should not be used to sell products. I’m sure that I am of a minority opinion, and that others will think that I am reading too much into this but I feel that some moments in life are meant to be private and cherished. I don’t know many of my friends who served when I did or after who head home hoping for a parade, none of us did what we did for those kind of reasons. Most are just looking for a clean bed, and a hot meal. I’m glad that Lt. Nadd is home safe, and thank him for his service.
