New videos and photos of the Oklahoma City wreckage impacting three small breweries

mustang damage 2(Oklahoma City, OK) – The video begins with a heavy sigh.

“Well, sorry if my hands are shaky but this is not the best day of my life.”

Those are the words of Mustang Brewing Brewmaster, Gary Shellman, as he walks through the wreckage of his damaged brewery.

On Friday night, a tornado ripped through the Greater Oklahoma City area, claiming the lives of at least nine people while destroying homes and businesses. Others like Mustang Brewing remained standing but not without significant damage.

On Saturday, community members joined Shellman and staff at the brewery to survey the damage, show support and assist in cleanup efforts. At least one area of the brewery where an air conditioner hung off of the roof was deemed unsafe for inspection.

Says Shellman, “We’re insured. Adjusters should be out Monday. We did get power and fermenter temperature fixed and hope that saves the beers already done.”

As noted in our early Saturday report, Mustang was just in the news last week for its partnership with Hanson on Mmmhops Pale Ale. A Facebook photo from last week also shows Mustang staff pictured with actor, William H. Macy, at a movie event.

Also impacted by the brewery damage is Anthem Brewing and Black Mesa Brewing. As explained by Anthem on its Facebook page…

“OKCity Brewing is where we brew our beer, but we do not own the equipment or building. We rent use of the equipment from OKCity. OKCity, is a brewers co-op where brewing companies can come in and brew their beer. Anthem Brewing brews there along with Black Mesa Brewing and Mustang Brewing. Mustang Brewing is who actually owns OKCity Brewing and the equipment, and another family owns the building. So they are the ones who have really experienced the serious loss.”

Fortunately for Anthem, construction of its own facility is slated to be finished by the end of the summer so the company won’t have to wait longer than that to start brewing again.
