Kim Jordan of @newbelgium in her keynote address: "We will get to 10% (market share), and go well beyond that." #craftbeer
— Gary Glancy (@brewgar) March 27, 2013
10% market share? For New Belgium alone? Craft beer in it’s entirety doesn’t even hit that target. New Belgium better lower their prices if that’s a percentage they realistically hope to achieve. Trying to convince people not only to switch from the adjunct lager they’ve been drinking all their lives to a beer with a significantly different taste profile is already hard enough, you’ve also got to contend with, at the price point they’re at, the fact that many people are unable or unwilling to pay the premium they’re asking for. They’re priced higher than Sam Adams, Magic Hat, and Sierra Nevada, when they’re not on sale, semi-locally anyhow. If they realistically want to make up 10% of the market, they need to not only get below all the other craft beers, they need to be in Budweiser territory.
I agree with her on the importance of a best-by date that doesn’t take a decoder ring to enjoy, though.
I believe she is referring to craft as a whole reaching 10% + market share. Look at the other quotes, she uses we repeatedly as she speaks about the state of craft beer.
Yeah sorry for not making that clear but when you look at the context of the various quotes, she is talking about craft beer as a whole.
