(Baltimore, MD) – Heavy Seas Beer founder, Hugh Sisson, appeared on Beer Sessions Radio this week to discuss, among other things, the company’s cask ale program.
Sisson says, “We think cask beer is the finest possible expression for draft beer.”
Heavy Seas is probably the largest producer of cask ale in the country, according to Sisson, and owns a little over 600 firkins. “We also have 12 actual wooden barrel firkins.”
It sounds like the company is interested in starting a cask movement in the U.S.. Just over a year ago, Heavy Seas debuted what Sisson calls the first American caskerator. “You can put it on a beer engine and the beer will last a week to ten days.”
Acording to Alex Hall of the Gotham Imbiber (and a cask ale savant), “A caskerator is essentially a kegerator designed
specifically to keep firkins* and pins at the perfect serving temperature for cask (i.e. cellar temperature’).” You can read more about caskerators in this issue of GI (PDF).
When host, Jimmy Carbone of Jimmy’s No. 43, talked about why they don’t do offer more cask ale, Sisson remarked that “we can help with you that.” Don’t be surprised to see Heavy Seas eventually roll out its caskerator in bars and try to otherwise raise awareness of cask ale in the U.S..
