SABMiller Executive Chairman on craft movement: “too many of them will go out of business”

Do you think at some point we’ll revert back to where we were before? More consolidation, a less sophisticated palate?

I don’t think the craft movement in its current guise will continue to grow indefinitely. I don’t think it can. It’s not economic. Too many people won’t make any money. Too many of them will go out of business. And I think it will become less fashionable. These things are fashion to some extent.

Interesting soundbite from a lengthier interview featuring Mackay’s take on the craft segment.

  1. Yes, because better food is also a fad. We all know we will revert back to cheap, easy, frozen fast food as well. It is just a fashion to like better flavor.

  2. People realizing they have taste buds is not a “fashion”. Moreover he meant a fad. That is a clunky line for a guy whose company is bending over backwards to buy stakes in craft breweries.

Meanwhile it is fascinating the use of duplicitous and convoluted word choice this guy uses. In essence the stance is the same as the mid 90s when craft had its first big boom. “It is just a fad.”

I love the implied sentiment that only small breweries can fail and go out of business that “Monty” espouses. It wreaks of the same incompetence that has led to the “too big to fail” mindset.
