Founders Harvest Wet-Hopped Ale to be bottled next week

Founders Harvest Wet-Hopped Ale(Grand Rapids, MI) – Here is the latest from Founders Brewing Company, courtesy of last week’s newsletter.

Our beloved wet-hopped Harvest Ale will be hitting shelves and taps again in October! We are bottling it on October 4, with shipments to our wholesalers to follow shortly after that. There is no set release date for this beer: we brew it when the hops are ready, and it is best consumed fresh. You should look for Harvest Ale near you beginning in mid-October.

This liquid dream pours a hazy golden straw color with a white, two-finger head. Your first sip rewards you with a super juicy hop presence bursting with fresh citrus, then finishes to introduce toasted malt undertones.

Odell Woodcut No. 6 Oak Aged American Ale coming soon

Odell Woodcut No. 6 Oak Aged American Ale

Press Release:

(Fort Collins, CO) – On October 6, 2012, Odell Brewing will release its sixth Woodcut brew, an oak aged American ale featuring Mosaic hops. Woodcut No. 6 is the first dry hopped offering in the series, and is the result of over a year of collaboration between the Mosaic hop farmers and Odell Brewing.

“We shared some Woodcut No. 3 and Woodcut No. 4 with Jason Perrault, a 4th generation Yakima Valley hop farmer, and he loved it,” said Brendan McGivney, head of production at Odell Brewing. “He and Brad Carpenter (his family began growing hops in the valley in 1868) then shared some experimental hops with us, and we fell in love with them.”

Odell Brewing began brewing with the experimental hops, known only as “HBC 369” at that time. The hops offered a profoundly unique flavor and aroma, so the brewers invited the pair to come to the brewery to brew Woodcut No. 6 with them, at which point they had landed on the name “Mosaic.”

The brewers included both Mosaic and another yet-to-be-named experimental hop variety in the kettle and Hopback. The beer was dry hopped with 100% Mosaic hops, and transferred to virgin American oak barrels where it aged for several months. The final blend marries the unique and complex tropical fruit sweetness of the Mosaic hop with the vanilla and toasted oak from the new barrels.

Odell Brewing will celebrate the release of Woodcut No. 6 on October 6th in the Tap Room with live music and local food. The brewery will also pour the beer at The Great American Beer Festival® October 11th – 13th.

Founded in 1989, Odell Brewing was started by Doug Odell, his wife Wynne, and his sister Corkie. Twenty-three years later, the culture of family and collaboration still thrives fostering a brewery full of beer-centric people. It is this passion for beer that inspires Odell Brewing to create quality, hand-crafted, innovative brews. As a regional craft brewery, Odell Brewing is committed to serving the communities in which it distributes by sourcing local raw materials, and through its charitable giving program known as Odell Outreach. Odell Brewing was recently named a “Top Company of 2010” by ColoradoBiz Magazine and is an award winning brewery, nationally and internationally: 2012 Brewers Association Recognition Award, 2011 Great American Beer Festival® – gold medal for Friek. 2010 North American Beer Awards – gold medal for Woodcut No. 3. 2009 BrewNZ Awards – gold for 5 Barrel Pale Ale. 2008 World Beer Cup® – gold for IPA. 2007 Great American Beer Festival® – gold medal for IPA.

Southern Tier production up 40% in 2012, entering Tennessee this fall

Southern Tier Brewing logoPress Release:

(Lakewood, NY) – Southern Tier Brewing Company of Lakewood, New York, announces the expansion of their distribution network with the addition of Ajax Turner of Nashville, TN.

The brewery is preparing to ship their entire catalog of beers to the Music City metro area, including limited quantities of the seasonal cult sensation Pumking Imperial Pumpkin Ale. The first of the Blackwater Series of imperial stouts to ship will be Oat followed by Choklat, available in November. The SuperPack will be available in early 2013. Featuring Unearthly Imperial IPA, 2xIPA, and Iniquity Imperial Black Ale, the SuperPack is a high gravity 12 pack of 12 ounce bottles with an average ABV of nearly 9.0%.

With a varied catalog, the Southern Tier Brewing Company has a lot to offer beer lovers. “There was a large Tennessee shaped hole in our map. We’ve begun filling that in with the addition of Ajax Turner Company,” said Phin DeMink, brewery president. “They’ll usher us in to another growing craft market in the greater Nashville area. We look forward to providing Southern Tier Brewing Company beers to another southern state.” DeMink added that the rest of the state will be online by January 2013.

“We are thrilled to add Southern Tier to our portfolio and are looking forward to spreading the liquid greatness they are known for.” Clark Calvert, craft/import manager at Ajax Turner added, “Nashville’s craft beer lovers are in for a real treat this October with the arrival of this great brand.”

In the summer of 2012 the brewery started construction on an expansion to include a 110 BBL brewhouse to help meet calls for increased production. Prior to this, a new high-speed bottle line was installed in December 2010 followed by a high speed keg line. Quality control and product consistency has remained paramount to the design decisions.

Southern Tier Brewing Company has watched their output and public demand steadily increase since the first few hundred barrels brewed in their former facility in 2003. With a remarkable 70,000 BBL brewed by the end of 2012, and with additional new markets like Tennessee, the brewery expects 2013 to be another record setting year for production.

[Note: 40% growth is based off of an estimated 50,000 barrels produced in 2011.]

Oakshire Big Black Jack Imperial Chocolate Pumpkin Porter coming next week

Oakshire Big Black Jack Imperial Chocolate Pumpkin PorterPress Release:

(Eugene, OR) – Pumpkins have been part of America’s brewing tradition since Colonial days, when pumpkin-brewed beers would have accompanied seasonal fall foods. Oakshire Brewing continues this long-time American tradition with their second release of award-winning Big Black Jack Imperial Chocolate Pumpkin Porter.

“Big Black Jack gives people a rich, warming beer that brings to mind the pleasures and foods of autumn,” explains Matt Van Wyk, Brewmaster at Oakshire Brewing, Eugene, OR. “We recommend pairing it with seasonal favorite foods such as spicy Indian and Mexican dishes, molé, smoked goose, buttery aged cheddar, Irish cheeses, Gouda cheese, chocolate and peanut butter cookies, toasted coconut, pumpkin tarts and chocolate soufflés.”

Part of Oakshire’s Single-Batch Beer Series, Big Black Jack became a fall favorite when it was originally released in 2011. The Imperial Porter also gained industry recognition, when it won the 2012 North American Brewing Awards Gold Medal for Hybrid Beers.

Brewers used a patent-pending technique to roast farm-fresh pumpkins from Winter Green Farm in Noti and Stahlbush Island Farms in Corvallis. Big Black Jack has been brewed with other ingredients that evoke fall: toasted pumpkin seeds, cocoa nibs, dark chocolate, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, allspice and ginger. The end result is a rich, dark brown Imperial porter with aromas of classic pumpkin pie spices that meld with dark cocoa notes. This malt-forward ale begins with flavors of cinnamon and chocolate, highlighted by toasty and chocolate flavors from specialty malts. This medium-bodied beer is a warming autumn delight at 7.5% ABV.

Beginning Oct. 1, 2012, Big Black Jack will be available for a limited time on draft and in 22-oz. bottles throughout Oregon, Washington, Alaska and Northern Idaho.

Night Shift Ever Weisse bottles to be released in two weeks

night shift brewing logo(Everett, MA) – Here is the latest from Night Shift Brewing, courtesy of the brewery’s Wednesday newsletter.

On Thursday, October 11, from 5-10pm, we’re hosting “EverLocal” at the Night Shift Taproom – a celebration of local beer, food, and music! What’s being featured?

The bottle release of Ever Weisse, our first “Taproom Exclusive” beer (only available at the brewery). It’s a Berliner Weisse sour w/ strawberries, kiwis, and hibiscus. We only brewed one tiny batch & we bottled it all. Samples available for tasting. […]

We’ll also have our regular beers available for samples, bottle sales, and growler fills, as well as plenty of tee shirts and glassware. And of course, our physical neighbor is another nanobrewery, Idle Hands Craft Ales, with even more beer available for sampling and sale.

Saint Arnold Fresh Hop Elissa IPA arrives on draft next week

Saint Arnold Brewing logo(Houston, TX) – Here is the latest from Saint Arnold Brewing Co., courtesy of Wednesday’s newsletter.

This year we had 350 lbs. of wet Cascade hops flown down to us the day they were picked and before they were dried so we could use them in a batch of Fresh Hop Elissa. We used our lauter tun as a giant hop back and ran the wort through these hops before knocking out to the fermenter.

Fresh Hop Elissa will be available on draft only and will be appearing around town where you normally find Elissa on tap. All of the Fresh Hop Elissa kegs have tap stickers attached to the kegs so the tap marker should say “Fresh Hop Elissa” if it is indeed the fresh hop batch. It will also be on tap at the brewery beginning Monday, October 1 until we run out.

Elissa IPA is a single hop beer using only Cascade hops. The fresh hops give a slightly grassier flavor to the beer. The difference in the flavors is subtle yet discernible. We replaced 67 lbs of our regular Cascade hops with the 350 lbs of wet hops in this 120 bbl batch.

Great Divide production up 34% through August, announces three Q4 releases

great divide oak aged yetiPress Release:

(Denver, CO) – Great Divide Brewing Co. will release three seasonals October 1st. This release will include: Oak Aged Yeti Imperial Stout, Fresh Hop Pale Ale and Hibernation Ale. These storied seasonals will be available from October through December.

Oak Aged Yeti Imperial Stout is Yeti Imperial Stout’s sophisticated sibling. They may be from the same clan, but they have entirely different personalities. Oak aging gives a subtle vanilla character, rounding out Yeti’s intense roastiness and huge hoppy nature. Who says you can’t tame a Yeti? At 9.5% ABV, it is available in 22oz. bottles, growlers out of the Great Divide Tap Room and 5-gallon kegs. It boasts a perfect Ratebeer.com score of 100 and was named one of BeerAdvocate’s 2010 “Top 100 Beers On Planet Earth.”

Hibernation Ale has been our celebrated winter tradition since 1995 and is Colorado’s original Strong Ale. This robust, dry-hopped ale has a malty richness balanced with a complex hop profile and hearty, warming character. At 8.7% ABV and a Ratebeer.com score of 98, Hibernation is available in 6-packs, growler fills out of the Great Divide Tap Room, 5-gallon kegs and 15.5-gallon kegs. Hibernation is a 3-time Great American Beer Festival medalist.

Fresh Hop Pale Ale is brewed with fresh, whole cone hops from the Pacific Northwest. We ship these “wet” hops to Denver overnight and brew shortly after harvest, imparting an intensely grassy hop aroma and citrus hop flavor in a medium-bodied ale. This year’s batch was brewed with Cascade, Centennial and Simcoe whole-cone hops. Clocking in at 55 IBUs and 6.1% ABV, Fresh Hop is a labor of love. It has garnered a Ratebeer.com score of 98 and is available in 22oz. bottles, growler fills in the Great Divide Tap Room and 5-gallon kegs.

Great Divide brews some of the globe’s most balanced yet assertive and flavorful beers. These beers have landed an impressive amount of acclaim: Great Divide beers have earned 17 Great American Beer Festival awards and 5 World Beer Cup awards. Great Divide was also ranked 14th in Ratebeer.com’s 2012 “Best Brewers in the World” and was ranked 7th in Beer Advocate’s 2010 “All-Time Top Brewers.” But why take their word for it? Crack open a bottle and decide for yourself.

Great Divide brewed 26,070 barrels in 2011, a 34% increase over 2010 production. Through August 2012, Great Divide’s production volume has increased 34% over the same period in 2011.

Send your name, contact information and the number of cases you would like to order (if supply allows) to [email protected] to be added to the list. You will receive an auto response indicating your email was received. This in no way guarantees you will receive any of this limited production beer.

The only way to be guaranteed any Mother is to be in Pacific City on November 17th.

IF we have remaining inventory of Mother of all Storms after “Mother’s Day” at the Pelican, we will be contacting people on the email waitlist in the order you were added beginning November 26th. At this time, we will confirm your order and collect payment information. Please be patient and do not call the Pelican – it will only delay the process and those answering the phone won’t have any details. Some restrictions apply; see online store policy for complete details regarding the shipment of beer.

IF inventory levels allow, a very limited supply of Mother of all Storms will be released to retails locations, however a date has not been determined.

How many minutes of work does it take people in each country to pay for a beer?

Analysts at UBS, a Swiss bank, have calculated that it takes a German earning the national median wage just under seven minutes of work to purchase half a litre of beer at a retail outlet. At the bottom of the pint glass, low wages and high taxes mean that boozers in India must toil for nearly an hour before they have earned enough to quench their thirst.

BridgePort Hop Harvest goes lager route for first time

Bridgeport Hop Harvest PilsnerPress Release:

(Portland, OR) – BridgePort Brewing Company, Oregon’s oldest craft brewery has cooked up a new take on its traditional Hop Harvest fall brew, blending fresh northwest hops with a smooth Pilsner malt to make a German style Imperial pilsner.

While this is the fifth generation of BridgePort’s “Hop Harvest”, it is the first time that the brewery has done a primary yeast fermentation with lager yeast.

BridgePort Brewmaster, Jeff Edgerton, used 800 pounds of fragrant green Oregon Tettnang hops (for 180 bbls) in BridgePort’s hopjack to bring out the pronounced hop characteristics and masterfully blended this with the smooth and mellow qualities of a traditional pilsner.

Of course he had to add the NW twist of making it an imperial. “We’ve never done an actual lager yeast fermented beer at BridgePort so making it an 8% ABV pilsner made it that much more fun. It will sneak up on you!”

“I think our customers will be pleasantly surprised by the outcome,” comments Edgerton. “We’ve had a lot of fun this year playing around with different flavor profiles
– from spices, to fruits and now with the flavors of fresh Oregon hops mixed with an unexpectedly German recipe.

People will notice a couple of things when comparing this version with past Hop Harvest recipes– the taste is a bit more subtle, the color is lighter and the alcohol is more noticeable.”

Hop Harvest will be available in 22 oz. bombers while supplies last. Check www.bridgeportbrew.com for more
information and availability.

BridgePort’s Hop Harvest Stats:

IBU’s: 44
ABV: 8.0%
Color: Light Gold
OG: 17.0%

Ingredients: Hop Harvest Pilsner is an Imperial Pilsner style fresh hop beer using Austrian Aurora hops in the kettle and 4.5 lbs. per barrel of green Oregon Tettnang hops in our hopjack. The base for this beer is Great Western Malting Co.’s, Superior Pilsen malt which gives a very light golden color combined with a biscuit like pilsner malt flavor to complement that generous amount of hops of European heritage.

Founders All Day IPA label

Founders All Day IPA transitions from year-round to seasonal lineup

When we first launched All Day IPA in February of this year, we were limited by a hop shortage and could only brew enough to distribute it to our home state of Michigan, along with Ohio, North Carolina, and Chicagoland. Based on new contracts, we will not have the same constraints on production of All Day IPA in 2013 and will be able to release it to all of our markets for the first time.

Alaskan Winter Ale returns in early October (video)

alaskan winter alePress Release:

(Juneau, AK) – Winter is coming to Alaska, but Alaskan Brewing Co. is undeterred, welcoming the cool and wet winter weather with the always-anticipated release of its seasonal Winter Ale.

“This beer is one of our favorites in the brew house–especially as it gets colder here,” says Alaskan brewer Greg Morgan. “Sitka spruce trees carry a special significance to brewers, not just because we see them through every window of the brewery. In beer, the spruce tips add this really great, floral aroma that fills the brewery, and a subtly-sweet flavor that you’d never expect.”

Alaskan’s Winter Ale is brewed in the style of an English Old Ale–a traditionally malty, warming beer brewed in the fall and consumed through the winter. Alaskan’s take on this style is inspired by the seafaring adventurer Captain Cook, who discovered the pleasant flavor and scurvy-preventing value of spruce tips during one of his 18th century voyages in search of a Northwest Passage. (VIDEO: http://ow.ly/dVVhb)

This ale balances the sweet, heady aroma of Sitka spruce tips with a clean, crisp noble hop finish and its malty richness complements the alcohol warmth.

Alaskan Winter Ale has been a proud member of Alaskan’s growing seasonal releases since its launch in 2000. Fans of this great winter warmer will see this bold and complex brew in early October. Look for six packs and draft sales in select locations throughout Alaska and the other 13 states where Alaskan beers are sold.

Another seasonal favorite, the Alaskan Spring Black IPA, releases on January 1, 2013, just in time for the slowly lengthening days of early spring. Learn more about where to find Alaskan Brewing products by using the online Brewfinder at alaskanbeer.com.
