Terrapin So Fresh and So Green, Green hits the market in mid-late October

terrapin so fresh and so green green

Press Release:

(Athens, GA) – This week, Terrapin Beer Co. brewed one of its most audacious beers: So Fresh & So Green, Green.

Released annually at their Hop Harvest Festival, this is a fresh hop (or “wet-hop”) beer, meaning it’s brewed with freshly picked hops… not an easy task in Athens, Georgia! This adventurous beer began life on a hop farm in Washington State where, on September 17th, the hops for this year’s brew were picked and then flown overnight to the brewery in Georgia. The hops arrived at the brewery in large, fragrant cardboard boxes with labels declaring the name of the hop on the sides. These boxes contained something that is highly coveted at the brewery and their arrival brings not only a pungent olfactory overload but the promise of an equally aromatic beer.

Where the delivery truck pulled away Tuesday morning now sat a full pallet of cardboard containers filled with fresh Citra hops. Game on! Fresh hops don’t stay fresh for long, so Terrapin brewmaster Brian “Spike” Buckowski began brewing almost immediately. It takes five times as many fresh hop cones to get the same amount of hoppy bitterness you’d get from the dried and pelletized hops the brewery normally uses, so bucket after bucket of hop cones were dumped into each batch of So Fresh & So Green, Green. This labor of love continued around the clock until all batches were brewed and every single one of those fresh hop cones had been transformed into what makes Terrapin’s fresh hop beer the brew so many “hop heads” across the Southeast are waiting for.

This year’s hop, Citra, is a relatively new strain of hops released in 2007. Known for its heavy aroma of citrus and tropical fruits, this aptly named variety has recently gained in popularity.

“Citra’s relatively high alpha acid content, 11.5%, and its distinctive character make it an especially good choice for a fresh hopped beer,” said Buckowski. “I’m really looking forward to seeing what kind of foods people pair this one with.”

So Fresh & So Green, Green will be available in 22oz bottles and 1/6 barrel kegs throughout Terrapin’s nine state distribution range. Of course, it will also be previewed at the Hop Harvest Festival at the brewery on October 6th. Look for it to hit the shelves in limited quantities around mid-to-late October.

southern tier pumking imperial pumpkin ale

Southern Tier estimates Pumking shipments at 8,000 barrels over the past two months

Nathan Arnone, public relations director for Southern Tier Brewing in Lakewood, N.Y., estimates the brewery shipped about 8,000 barrels of its imperial-strength Pumking during August and September, more than 10 percent of Southern Tier’s entire output for 2012. Using drums of puréed pumpkin eliminated a lot of grunt work and enabled the brew crew to pump out beer before this year’s crop ripened, satisfying retailers who wanted the product on their shelves before Labor Day.

Alaskan Brewing to launch Sampler Pack in Pacific Northwest next month

Alaskan Sampler 12 Pack pac nw

Press Release:

(Juneau, AK) – Alaskan Brewing is excited to announce the launch of the Alaskan Brewing Sampler Pack. The new package features the award-winning Alaskan Amber, Alaskan IPA, Alaskan White, and a rotating Brewer’s Choice selection. The twelve-packs will ship to select Pacific Northwest locations this October.

“With almost 600,000 square miles in Alaska there is always more to explore,” said Alaskan Brand Manager Cindy Burchfield. “The Alaskan Sampler rewards this passion for discovery with an array of taste experiences.”

In addition to the three bottles each of Alaskan’s three most popular varieties, the Alaskan Sampler will feature a fourth rotating “Brewer’s Choice” selection.

“We have a diverse family of beers that many don’t often get the opportunity to sample,” said Plant Manager Curtis Holmes, “ranging from malty to hoppy, from more the sessionable to the complex & bold. We are excited to showcase some of our more limited and seasonal products through the rotating slot in the new package.”

Alaskan Brewing’s flagship beer-Alaskan Amber-is based on a turn-of-the-century recipe that quenched the thirst of miners during the Alaska Gold Rush. Smooth and richly malty, this altbier goes well with any meal.

The intense, complex aromatic character of the Alaskan IPA is achieved by dry hopping. The fruity, citrusy aroma and refreshing finish is a nice complement to grilled prawns and spicy foods.

Alaskan White’s unique aroma of coriander complements the crisp finish of orange peel. The witbier is great paired with seafood or salads.

The Brew Crew will choose among their favorites for the fourth beer in each sampler pack based on seasonality and availability.

Alaskan expects to expand distribution of the new Sampler Pack beyond the Pacific Northwest in 2013. Learn more about where to find Alaskan Brewing products by using the online Brewfinder at alaskanbeer.com.

That said, it looks like a sell-out could happen again soon. 17 cases or so of Surly Fest, as of this posting, will not last long.

Without further ado, a few new items to check out this week:

Shipping Tips:

Here is a link to the Shipping Policy and list of states to which France 44 can ship beer.

Fill up your cart and then click on “My Cart” in the upper right corner. On the next screen (order screen), punch in your zip code in the Destination Zip Code input field in the lower right part of the order screen and hit enter on the keyboard. It will then calculate your shipping (without having to sign up or enter a credit card).

The optimal order where shipping cost is most efficient is 24 beers (or 48 or multiples of 24 from there). If you order a 25th beer, they have to add a second box which is an extra charge.

Starr Hill Brewery bottles shot crop

Press Release:

(Charlottesville, VA) – Starr Hill Brewery, Virginia’s largest and most award-winning craft brewery, is expanding into the Philadelphia market beginning in October.

The craft brewery plans to make its entire core lineup available which includes: Northern Lights IPA, Boxcar Pumpkin Porter (fall seasonal), The Love (wheat beer), Jomo Lager, Dark Starr Stout, Festie (amber lager), Starr Pils, and Double Platinum (Imperial IPA) as well as the brewery’s variety packs and All Access rotating draught-only series of beers.

“Twelve years ago it was our dream to open a world-class craft brewery in Charlottesville, Virginia, and that dream became a reality,” said Mark Thompson, founder & master brewer of Starr Hill. “We’ve been successful in Virginia and some surrounding states, but entering Philadelphia is taking the dream to a new level. Philadelphia is one of the most sophisticated craft beer markets in the country, and I can’t tell you how excited we are to introduce Philly beer lovers to Starr Hill.”

Starr Hill beers will be available on draught (1/2 barrels and 1/6 barrels) and in bottles (six-packs and 12-packs) at bars, restaurants, beer distributors and delis. The beers will be distributed by Penn Distributors, Inc. (Philadelphia) and Gretz Beer Company (Norristown, Penn.).

“Starr Hill is based in Charlottesville, but they have been well known and well respected throughout the craft beer community for years,” said Mike Gretz Sr., president and chief executive officer, Gretz Distributing. “Mark Thompson and his team brew a wide variety of craft beer styles, and they’ve been successful wherever they’ve gone. We’re thrilled to welcome them to Philadelphia, and we look forward to working with them to build the Starr Hill brand.”

“Starr Hill coming to Philadelphia is great news for anyone who is passionate about great craft beer,” said Matt Funchion, president and chief operating officer, Penn Distributors, Inc. “Mark Thompson is one of the most respected brewers in the country, and we could not be happier to be distributing Starr Hill’s full lineup of award-winning beers.”

At the Great American Beer Festival (GABF) in 2011, Starr Hill was awarded a gold medal in the Vienna lager category for Jomo Lager, a light-bodied amber lager. The company also won silver medals for two of its specialty beers, Monticello Reserve Ale (indigenous beer category) and Smoke Out (smoke beer category). The company has won 19 GABF medals since its founding.

Starr Hill Brewery was founded in 1999 in Charlottesville, Virginia by Mark Thompson and Kristin Dolan. The company brews more than 20 brands of beer representing a variety of beer styles. Starr Hill brands are distributed in Virginia, Washington, DC, Maryland, North Carolina, Tennessee, and South Carolina.

Brooklyn’s Oliver bottling White House Honey Ale soon

A quick taste of our proto-beer revealed a broadly fruity palate with some caramel and floral notes, and a good balancing bitterness. Based on this and the lab analysis, I decided to follow the recipe as written and leave the beer undiluted. We will bottle soon, and I think this beer is going to be fine.

Awaiting word from the brewery as to whether this will be any kind of ‘official’ bottling or an actual brewery release…stay tuned.

Karl Strauss Mouette à Trois Holiday Fruit Cake Ale coming this winter

Karl Strauss Mouette a Trois Holiday Fruitcake Ale(San Diego, CA) – As part of Karl Strauss Brewing Company’s “non-traditional” 12 Days of Christmas series, the company plans to release Mouette à Trois, a holiday fruitcake ale. Karl Strauss brewed a Belgian dubbel with apricot and cherries, then spiced the beer with cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, orange peel, and clove, before adding brandied oak chips. Look for more details in November.

Label Copy:
Mouette à Trois est la meilleure bière que vous avez jamais goûté ou notre nom n’est pas Karl Strauss. Mouette à Trois, meaning Three Seagulls, is the 3rd installment in our less than literal “Twelve Days” series of holiday ales. Brewed with fresh apricots, cherries and a blend of spices, the resulting strong ale is Belgian Dubbel meets fruit cake. Rich layers of candied fruit and warming spices are punctuated by notes of toffee and fresh-baked bread. Aging on brandy-cured French oak adds hints of vanilla that linger through a warming finish.
