Firestone Walker Brewing Co. christens new 60-barrel brewhouse

firestone walker brewing logo

Press Release:

(Paso Robles, CA) – Firestone Walker Brewing Company today announced that it has begun brewing beer at its new state-of-the-art brewhouse at the brewery in Paso Robles on California’s Central Coast.

The new 60-barrel brewhouse reflects Firestone Walker’s mission to continuously perfect the brewing process.

“We are always aiming to make the next brew better than the last,” said co-proprietor Adam Firestone. “The difference may be tiny, but it needs to be measurable and constant. The new brewhouse is our latest investment in this mission.”

The brewhouse occupies a new three-story tower that has been integrated into the front of the brewery building. The tower now serves as the brewery’s primary visual icon and features broad glass walls on two sides of the second story, providing a permanent window into the brewing process.

“Back in my university days, while homebrewing in my garage in Kalamazoo, Michigan, I dreamed of one day having a brewhouse like the ones I had seen while traveling through Europe on foreign study,” said Brewmaster Matt Brynildson. “That day has finally arrived.”

Quality and Efficiency

The new brewhouse is the result of extensive research conducted by proprietors Adam Firestone and David Walker, as well as Brynildson and his brewing team. They were ultimately drawn to a company called Huppmann in Kitzingen, Germany, which has been making brewhouses for generations.

“We selected Huppmann for many reasons,” Firestone said. “These involve wort handling, their proprietary wet mill called Millstar, the overall simplicity of the design, the flexibility of the installation, and the technology to marry our existing brewhouse into the new one. The automation package will allow us to precisely replicate each step and track progress unlike ever before.”

The brewhouse was installed with extensive custom features made to meet Brynildson’s vision for maximizing beer quality, including his personal modifications for milling, hop dosing, and kettle efficiency. The new brewhouse equipment allows Brynildson the ultimate flexibility for making every beer style imaginable. “By the time we got done with it, it essentially became a full-blown custom hot rod brewhouse,” Brynildson said.

The new brewhouse also improves the overall efficiency of the brewing process, in terms of both manpower and resources. “We elected every option possible to save on energy and water consumption without compromising the quality of our beers,” said Mark Fischer, the brewery’s plant engineer. “We will now be able to brew the same amount of beer using half the amount of energy as before.”

Architectural Inspiration

The tower design of the brewhouse is an efficient way to brew beer, using gravity to move ingredients when applicable, and also requiring a smaller footprint.

The new brewhouse tower was designed by local architect Val Milosevic and incorporates design features that honor two iconic structures in the Paso Robles region—the Farmer’s Alliance building in Paso Robles, and the Templeton Feed & Grain building in the nearby hamlet of Templeton.

Both of these buildings are visible testaments to the region’s rich agricultural heritage, and Firestone Walker Brewing Company was inspired to reflect this heritage in the design of its new brewhouse tower.

The brewhouse is adjacent to the brewery’s new visitor center, which features viewing windows into the hop storage room and the brewhouse control room, as well as a tasting bar and retail shop.

The launch of the new brewhouse and visitor center follows Firestone Walker’s recent opening of the adjacent Taproom restaurant and the hosting of the inaugural Firestone Walker Invitational Beer Fest in Paso Robles in June. “Our goal is to create a destination experience built around craft beer education and appreciation,” Walker said.

Firestone Walker Brewing Company is a pioneering regional craft brewery founded in 1996 and located in the Paso Robles wine country on California’s Central Coast. The brewery specializes in iconic pale ales and vintage barrel-aged beers. Firestone Walker Brewing Company was awarded Mid-Sized Brewery of The Year honors at the 2003, 2007 and 2011 Great American Beer Festivals® as well as Champion Mid-Sized Brewery honors at the 2004, 2006, 2010 and 2012 World Beer Cup® competitions.

Boston Beer Chairman, Jim Koch’s state of the industry speech

boston beer jim koch raise pint

(Boston, MA) – Seeking Alpha has a rough 7-page transcript up of a recent speech by Boston Beer Company Chairman, Jim Koch, at the recent Barclays Back to School event. Highly worth a read. A few highlights (with some editing)…

On why craft brewer M&A deals are few and far between:

“You can consolidate a conflicting distributor footprint but it is a big problem. Alan Newman described to me the problems he had when Magic Hat brought Pyramid. In a lot of markets, they were sending salespeople to do business with two competing wholesalers. And the wholesalers wouldn’t see their salespeople because they say today you are working for me to sell Magic Hat but tomorrow you can be with the Pyramid wholesaler ruining my business. Get the hell out of here.”

On organizing retail by brand or style:

“I was talking to the beer manager at a very good retailer in Texas. They tried setting their shelves by style and it was apparently just a disaster. Consumers couldn’t find what they wanted and they were frustrated. Consumers want retailers to organize and structure chaotic categories for them and craft beer runs the risk of being chaotic. Consumers want some order and structure just like with imports. For example, they put all the Heineken together so you get this block of green and that helps the shopper know that’s the import category.”

On the retail shelf (and bar tap) space ceiling:

“Beer is starting to take a little bit shelf space from wine which hasn’t happened for decades. My guess is, retailers will probably continue to expand the shelf space for craft beers for several years, but it will hit a wall. I don’t think it’s going to contract because they think volume will grow. If/when it stops growing, the retailer will just come to the conclusion that they had 20% more shelf space for craft and didn’t sell more beer and maybe that wasn’t a good idea.

I am seeing it even with on-premise retailers that have added tap handles. They have gone from 10 to 20 to 30 and somewhere around 20, their volume stops growing. They realize that it was good to go from 10 to 20 because they got revenue increases but when it went from 20 to 30, they just added confusion and didn’t sell anymore beer at a higher price.”

On the tide turning against large domestics:

“Back in 1970 […] 99% of the beer was regular strength domestic beer. The import category was very small, less than 1% and there were no craft brewers. That was just over 40 years ago. You fast forward today and that scene has changed dramatically. That 99% is down to 24%. The leading brand in the regular strength domestic beer is Budweiser, which may still be the largest brand in the world. It is a great brand run by a great company with great marketing behind it. Despite all of that, its last year of growth was in 1987. Ronald Reagan was President.”

Innis and Gunn Spiced Rum Aged Beer debuts this month

innus and gunn spice aged rumPress Release:

(Edinburgh, SCOTLAND) – This month pioneering Scottish craft beer maker, Innis & Gunn, releases its third exclusive limited edition for the US market: a small-batch Spiced Rum Aged brew infused with the finest spiced rum from the Caribbean. In a landmark move by the brewer, which has won worldwide plaudits for its innovative oak-aged beer, this is believed to be the first Spiced Rum Aged beer to be made for the US. Spiced Rum is the fastest growing segment of the Rum Market in the USA with over 9-million cases being sold each year.

“We wanted to create a beer that would capture the spirit of the summer season,” says Dougal Sharp, CEO of Innis & Gunn. “The ingredients and the way that we have made this beer give it a delicious taste and aroma, bursting with spiciness, fruit and vibrancy.”

To create the Spiced Rum Aged, Innis & Gunn used its Oakerator™, the only one of its kind, which is an alternative way of oak ageing Innis & Gunn beer and the only way for them to create this unique new beer.

Dougal explains: “Caribbean distillers mature their rum in oak casks and then add their spices in a vat at the end of the process. There are no such thing as a ‘spiced rum barrel’ so we have made Innis & Gunn Spiced Rum Aged in a different way, using our unique Oakerator™ process.

Dougal adds: “Ever since we discovered the effect of maturing our beer in a first-use bourbon barrel back in 2002 we have been exploring different methods of oak-ageing to create great tasting beers. One of our most exciting projects has been developing our Oakerator™. This resulted from a programme that we undertook over several years at a cost of $150,000 at Herriot Watt University in Edinburgh, which is one of the world’s leading schools for brewing and distilling.

“The Oakerator™ enables us to make beers we would not otherwise be able to. At its most basic it imparts the typical flavors of barrel maturation, but above this it allows us to be even more creative with combinations of oak and spirit not normally found. Rather than putting the beer into the barrel, in the Oakerator™ we are getting the effect of ‘putting the barrel into the beer’, which, literally, was one of our earlier experiments!

“To make this beer we infuse air-dried, heartwood, toasted American Oak with an especially fine blend of spiced rums. We then bring the oak and our special beer together in the Oakerator™ in a unique process which enables us to achieve a perfect balance of oakiness and Caribbean spiciness in the beer.

“The Oakerator™ opens up a world of possibilities in making new and great tasting beers in the future.”

The final result is a well-balanced delicious beer with notes of baked apples and pears along with hints of dried fruit and oak. At your first sip the mellow biscuit malt is brought to life by rum notes of caramelized fruit and pear. The hops add a bitter quality and tastes of lychee, which complements the oak. This all diminishes to allow the rum to shine through with a trace of banana leaving lingering malt sweetness. All together, the mellow toffee character of the malt balances the lively spiciness from the rum and the bitterness from the Whitbread Golding Variety hops.

The Innis & Gunn Small Batch Limited Edition Spiced Aged Rum is now available for a limited time only on US shelves and is priced at $12.99 for a 4-pack.

Innis & Gunn Spiced Aged Rum is the third Limited Edition beer to be released in the US, following Innis & Gunn Irish Whiskey Cask, which was introduced in January, and then Innis & Gunn Independence Day, which debuted in July, both selling through the trade almost immediately. Over the past nine years, Innis & Gunn has won an international following for its innovative Limited Editions as well as the core range of Innis & Gunn Original and Rum Cask.

Tasting Notes
Color: A rich toffee hue.
Nose: Rich and pudding-like – baked apples and pears with hints of dried fruit, spice and oak.
Palate: The mellow biscuit malt is brought to life by the pungent rum notes of caramelized pear and cloves. The hops add a bitter quality and hints of grapefruit.
Finish: Mellow rum, perhaps a hint of banana, leaving a lingering malt sweetness.

Candela Rye Barleywine: Green Flash, Cigar City collaborate on GABF beer

green flash brewing logo

(San Diego, CA) – As first reported by Jonathan Shikes at Westword, Green Flash Brewing Co. and Cigar City Brewing have collaborated on a beer to appear during the week of the Great American Beer Festival.

The Falling Rock Taphouse will tap the first keg of Candela Rye Barleywine at 2:45pm on Friday, October 12th. More on the beer below, courtesy of Green Flash Marketing Communications Manager, Natalie Sellers…

The Green Flash Brewing Co. and Cigar City Brewing collaboration beer that was brewed specifically for GABF will debut in Denver at Falling Rock during the festival is called Candela – named after the retro green cigars popular in the US during the 1960s.

cigar city brewing logoCandela will be a Rye Barleywine with some wood aged accents from cedar spirals. The process of brewing the beer began here at Green Flash on August 28th – the Cigar City Brewmaster, Wayne Wambles came to San Diego from Florida to work with Chuck Silva to brew on Green Flash’s equipment.

The flavor profile will be malt focused and less hop driven (only 65 IBU) from Nugget and Brewer’s Gold hops with a higher alcohol content (the ABV is still TBD). The beer will have a big initial malt sweetness from caramel malts and kettle caramelization due to an extended boil. The full body and malt sweetness gives way slightly to a perceptible dryness from rye and cedar accents.

It will be available ONLY as a special release during GABF, and as of now – there is no plan to bottle or distribute nationally. There will be a limited draught availability for special events nationally – (to be determined).

Anderson Valley El Steinber debuts as brewery’s first full-production lager

anderson valley el steinber dark lagerPress Release:

(Boonville, CA) – Anderson Valley Brewing Company announced today that starting in September, a new Dark Lager will join its portfolio of award-winning ales. “El Steinber” is the brewery’s newest core offering in nearly seven years and its first full-production lager. Debuting in select markets as a draft-only offering beginning in September 2012, national distribution of both draft and package will follow in early 2013.

“We’ve crossed a new border with the release of ‘El Steinber,’” says Fal Allen, Brewmaster for Anderson Valley. “We wanted to create a sessionable dark lager with a twist. In our somewhat unusual take on the style, we add Midnight Wheat malt to give this beer its dark brown color, but also use roasted Indio-Hispano® blue corn flour to lighten the body and create a unique, toasty flavor. German Pilsner malt and Saaz hops round out this beer, producing a crisp, clean finish and smooth drinkability that is perfect for any occasion.”

As for the name “El Steinber,” Allen says it’s a combination of Spanish and Boontling (the local Anderson Valley dialect created in the late 1800s). Literally meaning “The Beer,” he explains its origin this way: “We were looking for a unique name that represented both the Latin influence of the Indio-Hispano® blue corn while keeping the heritage of our native Boontling alive. Eventually we decided upon ‘El Steinber’ and the image of Barkley in a serape; it’s meant to be fun and quirky, and show that although we’re committed to brewing world-class craft beer, we don’t take ourselves too seriously.”

Washington booze buyers reportedly fleeing to Oregon stores after price increases

Oregon liquor store operators have reported more Washington booze shoppers since the switch. Consumers say Washington spirits prices are higher since the June 1 privatization of the formerly state-run liquor sales system. New state fees have raised the retail price of booze anywhere from 25 to 30 percent above the former state-run system’s costs, although the state says prices are down 1.5 percent since June.

Oregon is a control state that is watching what happens in Washington very closely.

Victory Red Thunder Wine Barrel-aged Baltic Porter slated for November release

Victory Red Thunder Wine Barrel-aged Baltic Porter

Press Release:

(Downingtown, PA) – On Wednesday, November 21, Victory Brewing Company will release its first-ever wine barrel-aged beer: Red Thunder.

Victory Brewing Company is known for melding traditional styles and unique concepts to produce the highest quality, full flavored beers. Red Thunder does just that. By aging their popular Baltic Thunder in once-used red wine barrels from Wente Vineyards, Victory Brewing Company created Red Thunder. The burnished cocoa creaminess of the Baltic-style porter is accented by the tannic dryness of the wood to produce a rich, fruity final product.

“While enjoying our first batch of Baltic Thunder in 2007, Ron and I immediately sensed that the deep complexities of this nuanced brew left almost no room for improvement,” said Victory Brewing Company President and Co-Brewmaster Bill Covaleski. “But as our experience with Baltic Thunder grew, we became intrigued with barrel-aging it, and red wine barrels proved to deliver the perfect level of flavor enhancement.”

Packaged in 750 mL corked bottles, Red Thunder will be available at Victory Brewing Company’s Downingtown retail store beginning on Wednesday, 11/21 and in additional markets shortly after. Red Thunder will be distributed throughout Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, Illinois, Massachusetts and Ohio.

Alcohol by volume is 8.5%.

Victory Brewing Company is a privately held craft brewery headquartered in Downingtown, Pennsylvania. Begun by Bill Covaleski and Ron Barchet, childhood friends who met on a school bus in 1973, the brewery formally began operations in February of 1996. Victory, Pennsylvania’s widely acclaimed brewery and restaurant, now serves fans of fully flavored beers in 29 states with innovative beers melding European ingredients and technology with American creativity.
