Kern River Dirty Hippie Imperial Red Ale bottles to be released on September 21st

Kern River Dirty Hippie Imperial Red Ale(Kernville, CA) – Here is the latest from Kern River Brewing Co., courtesy of Thursday’s newsletter.

If you have not already had the newest in our hoppy lineup, you are missing out. This beer is loaded with Summit Hops and mellowed out with just enough crystal malt. We lovingly nurse it through the fermentation process with a little Grateful Dead and the end result is – well, come experience it for yourself.

We will be releasing 60 cases at the brewery starting Friday, September 21st. There will be a 6 bottle and 1 growler per person limit. We will also throw a little Class X Stout on tap as well as the sweet melodies of Lonely Avenue, a new band for us here at KRBC.

We are hoping to have limited distribution of this beer at stores in kern county, so keep an eye out at your local bottle shop.

Pumpkin Party – Planned for October 5th

We are tentatively scheduling our annual “Tap the Pumpkin” party for October 5th.

Stone Enjoy By 11.09.12 IPA going to Ohio and Colorado

stone enjoy by ipa logo

(Escondido, CA) – The Chicago Tribune quietly reported earlier this month that the next beer in Stone Brewing Company’s Enjoy By series will be Enjoy By 11.09.12 IPA. The beer will be available in Ohio, Colorado and (presumably) Southern California.

Stone is holding a book signing in Escondido for Brewmaster, Mitch Steele’s, new IPA book on October 4th and it looks like the event may double as a release party for Enjoy By 11.09.12 IPA.

That date happens to be 35 days before November 9th, the same timeframe for which the brewery plans to make each release available to maintain optimal freshness. Any Enjoy By beers still available in the market 35 days after their initial release will be pulled from shelves.

That said, indications from the inaugural Enjoy By IPA release are that Stone and its wholesalers won’t have to worry about dealing with ‘old’ beer.

From both a sales, logistics and consumer engagement standpoint, Enjoy By 09.21.12 IPA appears to have been wildly successful.

CEO, Greg Koch, recently said on the Aleheads podcast that the beer was bottled on a Friday and reached shelves and taps in Chicago and New Jersey the following Tuesday. In both Chicago and New Jersey, the beers disappeared quickly from retailers. Since then, countless fans have lobbied on social media channels for Stone to send the next Enjoy By series beer to their city. The company is tabulating all the votes with a slick webpage dedicated to the project. According to the company, all three regions where Enjoy By 09.21.12 IPA was shipped want more.

As to why Ohio and Colorado, Stone has yet to comment on why the company chose those two regions though Koch said in the aforementioned podcast that they chose New Jersey and Chicago for the first release because the “wholesalers were really enthusiastic about participating.” The company leaked in a distributor memo last year that New Jersey-based Hunterdon Distributors and Chicago-based Windy City Distributors were both among the company’s top ten wholesalers in cases shipped.

Ohio and Colorado are Stone’s third and fourth-ranked markets (not necessarily in that order) outside of Southern California. Denver-based CR Goodman and Cincinnati-based Cavalier Distributing were (and may still be) also among the company’s top ten wholesalers, according to the memo.

The release coincides with the Great American Beer Festival which takes place in Denver next month as well as the tenth anniversary year of Stone distributing in Ohio.

If the pattern continues for the third Enjoy By IPA release, consider that Texas, Arizona and Washington are top-performing markets where Stone has close relationships with key wholesalers.

Twisted Pine Reilly’s Oak Whiskey Red Scotch Ale returns this Friday

Twisted Pine Reilly's Oak Whiskey Red Scotch AlePress Release:

(Boulder, CO) – After fourteen months resting in bourbon barrels from the Buffalo Trace distillery, Reilly’s Oak Whiskey Red, a Scottish-style ale that won gold at GABF 2007 in the Wood- and Barrel-aged category, is ready to party. Bartenders at Twisted Pine Brewing Company’s ale house will begin pouring the oaken gem at 4pm on Friday, September 14th, and continue until the limited supplies are depleted.

Reilly’s pours deep crimson with a proper and persistent khaki head. The aroma drifts up in a wave of matured malt laced with bourbon, vanilla and raisins. One sip washes the palate with restrained malt sweetness tinged with toasted toffee and punctuated by a welcoming whiskey warmth. Earthy, bourbon-soaked oak and caramel barley build to a beautiful balance as sip by sensuous smooth sip leave the glass.

This well-rested Red is available in 12oz bottles by the four-pack, as well as in draft form, at Twisted Pine along with a select few other local establishments. In addition, brewers will be pouring Reilly’s Oak Whiskey Red at the Great American Beer Festival, where the beer is once again up for judging in the country’s largest national competition. For more information about availability of this gold-medal-winner, call the brewery or visit twistedpinebrewing.com.

50 ways to open a bottle of beer (video)

This is a short film that I was a part of for Adam Young’s solo Art Show at Common House Gallery entitled: Songs of the Early Riser. Adam had a concept for a video installation. I took his concept and put it into a video. We originally had 4 different edits looping at the show in his installation, but this edit is a compilation of my favorite clips from the three day shoot. This has been the most fun project I have been a part of to date. Sitting around with your friends killing a couple of six packs of beer trying to think of different means to open your next drink is pretty fun. I encourage you to try it.

LA-area brewers celebrate 4th LA Beer Week with prickly pear-based beers

la beer week unity label

Press Release:

(Los Angeles, CA) – To celebrate the 4th Annual LA Beer Week (Sept 20-30), several local brewers have brewed their own commemorative beers, all incorporating one special ingredient: prickly pears! Also known by their Spanish name, tuna, prickly pears are the edible and oh-so-tasty fruit from the Opuntia genus of cactus. Prickly pears have long been used as an ingredient in brewing, especially in Mexico, where they are used to create a traditional alcoholic beverage called colonche.

Eagle Rock Brewery has once again been tapped to create the official beer of LA Beer Week, named “Unity” to pay homage to the good ol’ beer industry folk from around the city who come together every year to help brew it. This year’s iteration is a play on a traditional Berliner Weisse, a refreshing, slightly tart style of beer hailing from… you guessed it… Berlin! Jazzed up with a touch of rye and a healthy dose of red and green prickly pear, Unity will be available on draft at select retailers throughout Los Angeles and Orange County, and will of course be served at the flagship LA Beer Week Festival on Sept. 30th at historic Union Station. Unity bottles will also be available to those who complete the “LA Beer Week Bucket List.” (More details on that to come soon!)
In addition to Eagle Rock’s Unity, other breweries around town were encouraged to create their own prickly pear beers especially for LA Beer Week, and several gladly stepped up to the challenge!
  • Cismontane Brewing Company —  “Nopal de Trigo” — hefeweizen brewed with hand-pressed prickly pear juice.
  • El Segundo Brewing Company  —  “Prickly Dog” — White Dog IPA with prickly pear and a yeast strain swiped from Monkish Brewing Co.
  • Golden Road Brewing — an as-yet-unnamed honey blonde brewed with prickly pear fruit, cactus honey, and mesquite-smoked cactus paddles (nopales)
  • Ladyface Ale Companie — “Opuntia Megasperma” — cask-conditioned Chesebro IPA with locally harvested wild prickly pear fruit. Only one cask was made, which will be available exclusively at the LA Beer Week Festival on 9/30.
  • Monkish Brewing Co. — “Sueño Para Los Angeles” — a Belgian-inspired ale brewed with wheat, maize, honey malt, and sour malt, infused with prickly pear puree.
  • Smog City Brewing Co. — “LABW Saison” — a light farmhouse-style beer spiked with prickly pear.
Beachwood BBQ & BrewingHangar 24 Craft Brewery, and Kinetic Brewing Co. have also taken on this most noble project, but have not yet finalized their recipes.
ABOUT LA BEER WEEK

Rhizing Bines Imperial IPA: Dogfish Head, Sierra Nevada team up on new collaboration (video)

rhizing bines sierra nevada dogfish head label

Press Release:

(Milton, DE) – Dogfish Head and Sierra Nevada, two family-owned craft breweries known for their unique hopping techniques, are deepening the bond they forged with the 2009 collaboration Life & Limb.

Their new beer, an East-meets-West Imperial IPA called Rhizing Bines, will clock in at 8.5% ABV and 70 85 IBUs.

“We had a lot of fun brewing the original dark and roasty Life & Limb in Chico with the Grossmans and Sierra Nevada’s extended family,” says Dogfish Head President and Founder Sam Calagione. “We are very proud of the way that beer turned out. Now it’s our turn to repay that hospitality and brew a very hop-centric IPA in Milton with our pals from Chico, incorporating innovative ingredients and techniques from both breweries.”

The beer

On the hot side, Rhizing Bines will go through Dogfish’s signature continual-hopping process with floral and citrusy Bravo hops. On the cold side, it will be dry-hopped with an experimental varietal so new it doesn’t yet have a name, just a number: Hop 644. A component of Sierra Nevada’s aroma-boosting Torpedo system will make a pit-stop in Delaware for dry-hopping duty before it heads to Sierra’s new North Carolina brewery.

To celebrate Sierra Nevada planting East Coast roots, Dogfish Head tracked down a Carolina heirloom wheat grown and milled at Anson Mills. The soft red winter wheat contributes subtle sweet and nutty notes to this hop-forward ale.

“It gives my wife and myself great comfort to know that although we’re leaving our home and friends on the West Coast, we’re joining our craft brewing friends on the East Coast,” says Sierra Nevada General Manager Brian Grossman. “Here’s to great beer!”

The label

The label for Rhizing Bines depicts the pairings behind this beer: two hop varietals, two yeast strains (Chico and Doggie), two unique hopping processes and two family-owned breweries. These bonds start at the root – or rhizome – and stretch throughout the mature bines.

“Sam and his family and the entire Dogfish crew have been friends of ours for a long time,” says Sierra Nevada Founder Ken Grossman. “When we started talking about doing another collaboration we jumped at the chance, especially since this version will be the hoppy counterpoint to the last brews. We couldn’t say no! We’re looking forward to joining forces again. We’ve got one of our Hop Torpedos on a truck right now on its way to Delaware via North Carolina, and we’re eager to taste the finished product.”

Rhizing Bines will be brewed at Dogfish Head’s coastal Delaware brewery. It’s expected to hit taps and shelves throughout Dogfish’s 27-state distribution network in February 2013.

Press Release:

(Philadelphia, PA) – Already recognized as America’s oldest brewery, Yuengling now holds a coveted new distinction: America’s largest American-owned brewery. To celebrate, Yuengling wants to thank the city that has played the most significant role in supporting the brewery — generation after generation — with a free lager and a sincerethank-you. At precisely 6:30 p.m. on Friday, September 28, National Drink Beer Day, Philadelphians 21 and older are invited to one of more than 250 bars, both in the city and the suburbs, to receive a free bottle of lager and a personal ‘thank-you’ from 5th-generation brewery President and owner Dick Yuengling.

“Ever since my great-great grandfather brewed our first bottle of beer in 1829, Philadelphians have been supporting us and pushing us to grow,” said Yuengling. “The truth is, without Philadelphia, we simply would not be where we are today. The city has truly shown our family business brotherly love, and we’d like to raise a glass to that. Now that we’re the largest American-owned brewery, it’s time we say thanks in the most appropriate way – with a Lager on us.”

In partnership with distributor Origlio Beverage, Yuengling will supply more than 10,000 bottles of free beer to over 250 bars across the five-county Greater Philadelphia region. One of Dick Yuengling’s daughters, Jennifer Yuengling, the brewery’s shipping manager, will make a special appearance at Chickie’s & Pete’s on Packer Avenue in South Philadelphia to join in the celebration. At precisely 6:30 p.m. on September 28, Philadelphians are encouraged to tune their TVs to Comcast SportsNet, to watch a special toast to Philly from Dick Yuengling, directly from the historic Pottsville brewery, and join in the citywide toast. There is no cost or cover to get in. Free Lagers will be distributed as supplies last.

Dick Yuengling credits some family traditions to the company’s success story.

“At the end of the day, what matters most is my family’s aggressive commitment to producing an original quality product that people love,” said Yuengling. “Our distribution network is strong, and it’s our dedicated team of employees, our family values, and, of course, loyal Lager drinkers, that have led to that growing network.”

To find out where you can join in the toast, visit www.yuengling.com. Philadelphians 21 andolder are encouraged to enjoy responsibly.

Stillwater Artisanal launches Sensory Series with Lower Dens

stillwater lower dens

Press Release:

(Baltimore, MD) – The Stillwater Sensory Series is a collaboration between Stillwater Artisanal and singular musical artists. In this first collaboration, Stillwater is working with Lower Dens to make an ale based on an interpretation of their song, “In the End Is The Beginning.” On the bottle itself, a QR code will link to an exclusive Lower Dens performance of the song. Ultimately, this is a true artistic collaboration that aims to create a full sensory experience – sound, sight, smell, touch, and taste.

“With Stillwater, we set out to create an environment of intrigue; from the visual aesthetics of the packaging to the lack of definitive style of the beer, subtle complexity is also our hallmark.. we are asking the consumer for consideration, to interact with the product,” says Brian Strumke, Owner / Brew Master. “It instantly rang clear to me that [Lower Dens] were seasoned mature artists.. there were hints of beloved nostalgia but nothing obvious or trendy; driving repetition with intricate overlays allows the listener to take the back seat for a ride while also tempting you to look deeper within.. these were all traits that I related to, from my days as an electronic music artist and now as a beer designer.”

‘In the End is the Beginning’ is taken from the band’s second studio album, Nootropics (pronounced No-eh-tro-pics), released earlier this year on Ribbon Music. The song is lengthy, contemplative: an end-of-the-world song wherein the narrator readies him/herself for whatever’s next.

“Brian explained the Sensory Series and immediately we were on board,” says band member Jana Hunter. “He took something we spent a lot of time on and put a lot of thought and ourselves into, and he offered the same.”

“White but not bright” is how I described the song and that is what I have set out to create with beer itself. Light in body and color intermingled with aspects of dark fruits and a floral earthy spiciness, gently accented with a hint of smoke” states Strumke. The beer itself will come in the form of individual 375ml bottles and also 20L kegs and initial distribution with span 35 states via Twelve Percent Imports – Brooklyn, NY.

[BeerPulse note: The Sensory Series website appears to indicate November as month of release.]

The band has spent a lot of time touring since the release of their debut album Twin-Hand Movement in 2010, including recent stops at festivals both here and abroad such as Pitchfork Music Festival, Primavera, among others. Lower Dens will hit the road again later this autumn and will see them perform at this year’s installment of ATP’s Nightmare Before Christmas and include support dates with Kurt Vile and Grizzly Bear.

Westbrook Brewing update: Single Hop Nelson Sauvin, Märzenbier, Dark Helmet

Westbrook Märzenbier Octoberfest Lager

(Mt. Pleasant, SC) – Here is the latest from Westbrook Brewing Co., courtesy of Thursday’s newsletter.

Lots of new stuff coming your way this Fall/Winter! First up we have the 3rd (but not final) installment in our single-hop series: Nelson Sauvin. This is our favorite one so far (besides the original Citra Rye), so get it while it’s fresh. Kegs should be popping up on tap this week and bottles will be released the week of 9/24.

It looks like its finally starting to cool off in Charleston, plus all the pumpkin beers have already been consumed (little brewer’s joke there, ha) which means it’s time for the the return of the Maerzenbier, our Octoberfest-style lager! Kegs go out on 9/17, bottles on 9/24.

Following the Marzen in late October/early November will be the Dark Helmet Schwarzbier and Vanilla Tree Dubbel. We’re also really excited to release our Saison again sometime in October! It will be packaged in 750ml bottles and is 100% bottle conditioned. A limited amount of kegs will also be available. We hope to make this a regular offering, but in keeping with the Saison/farmhouse brewing tradition we plan to brew it a little (or maybe a lot) differently each time.

Finally, in December we will release our 2nd Anniversary beer! This is a different beer each year, so no, this will not be the Mexican Cake. Hopefully it will be something just as awesome (we haven’t decided exactly what yet). Note to all the Mexican Cake fans out there: mark your calendars for May 2013.

We are finally able to print the “packaged on” date, time and the batch # on every Westbrook can thanks to our spiffy new Domino printer. We have a little bit of the unlabeled cases still in stock but once we run through those all new batches will have this info printed on the bottom of the cans.

MillerCoors won’t renew Henry Weinhard’s contract with Full Sail

Since 2003, Henry’s beers have been brewed in downtown Hood River at Full Sail and have provided a significant boost and cash flow for its makers. It was a lifeline that has helped Full Sail continue to grow. Now that line will be cut after March of 2013, when SAB Miller will end its contract with Full Sail.

Great Lakes Fighting Heart Irish Red Ale to honor Cleveland’s Johnny Kilbane

great lakes brewing logoPress Release:

(Cleveland, OH) – Great Lakes Brewing Company is proud to announce the release of Fighting Heart Irish Red Ale, a new Pub Exclusive brew named in honor of Cleveland-born fighter Johnny Kilbane.

Fighting Heart Irish Red Ale will be tapped on September 25th at 6:00 PM in the Beer Cellar of GLBC’s Ohio City Brewpub. This free public event coincides with the 100th anniversary of Kilbane’s victory against Abe Atell, which made him the World’s Featherweight Champion, a title he held longer than any fighter in the history of boxing. GLBC will donate $1.00 from each pint sold to the Johnny Kilbane estate’s memorial fund. Light appetizers will be served while supplies last.

GLBC Pub Brewer Joel Warger chose the roasty, malty Irish Red style to honor Kilbane’s heritage. The beer will be available exclusively on tap at the GLBC Brewpub while supplies last.

Fighting Heart Irish Red Ale is named after a poem written by Kilbane, and is a collaboration between GLBC, and Kevin and Erin O’Toole, great grandchildren of Kilbane. “Johnny was Cleveland’s first international sports hero,” notes Kevin O’Toole. “He was a shining example of how anyone can literally come from nothing to achieve great success and then use that success for the betterment of the community.”

Henry Weinhard’s brand goes national

Henry Weinhards Private Reserve Northwest Lager

Update: The New School reports that MillerCoors won’t renew its production contract with Full Sail Brewing next spring

Press Release:

(Chicago, IL) – Henry Weinhard spent considerable time and effort exploring the Pacific Northwest and searching for the perfect location for his brewery. More than 150 years later, beer drinkers across the country have the chance to explore the taste of the Pacific Northwest. This month, Henry Weinhard’s is launching three beers nationally: Private Reserve, Redwood Flats Amber Ale and Woodland Pass IPA.

The affordable, uncomplicated craft beers pair well with easy-going foods, such as nachos, burgers and steak.

  • Woodland Pass India Pale Ale:  Originally developed for British sailors stationed in India, IPAs were aggressively hopped to help prevent spoilage on long ocean voyages. Henry’s has eased up on the hoppiness just a bit to let the caramel malts shine through and let beer drinkers appreciate the hops in all their glory.
  • Redwood Flats Amber Ale:  With its beautiful copper color and subtle hop aroma, Redwood Flats Amber is our traditional take on a modern American classic. Featuring a unique blend of American hops and malts, this beer is bold and assertive, with a smooth, hoppy flavor that’s easy to drink.
  • Private Reserve:  A crisp, clean, American Pale Lager, Henry Weinhard’s Private Reserve blends Henry’s German heritage with the natural ingredients of the Pacific Northwest. It’s brewed with 100 percent Cascade hops from Oregon.

“Today, we swim in an ocean of beer options, from ultra hoppy IPAs to stouts aged with kiwis in whiskey barrels,” said Katie Cowan, brand manager for Henry Weinhard’s.  “While we respect these breweries for pushing the boundaries of beer, Henry’s is serving up rock-solid, uncomplicated beers that are textbook examples of Henry’s original motto:  craft good ingredients into quality products.”

There’s never been a guy who cared more about making good beer easy to enjoy than Henry Weinhard.  He left Germany in 1856 with nothing but a recipe, a copper kettle and a thirst to share his beers with the people of America.  He was a savvy businessman, a straight shooter and generous to a fault. Legend has it, he even offered to pump free beer through a public fountain so people could enjoy it at will.

The three Henry Weinhard’s beers are now available in bottles, priced around $6.49 per six-pack.   Woodland Pass IPA and Redwood Flats Amber are also available on draft.

About Henry Weinhard’s

In the spring of 1856, a young brew master from Germany traveled months aboard a cargo ship to America and arrived in Oregon Territory.  Young Henry established his brewery outside of Ft. Vancouver and had a steady stream of thirsty trappers, soldiers and loggers to enjoy his high quality brews.  Demand quickly increased for Henry’s fine brews and he continued to share them with the people by purchasing saloons, delivering beer to neighboring cities via horse-drawn carriages and even shipping beer aboard barges to San Francisco.  By the end of the century, Henry became a leading citizen of Portland and was revered for his craft of brewing.  He passed away in 1904 and left behind a wealth of friends and a tradition of high quality, authentic beers, brewed with ingredients from the Pacific Northwest, including Woodland Pass India Pale Ale, Redwood Flats Amber Ale, Private Reserve, Blue Boar, Northwest Wheat and Blonde Lager.
