Cincinnati-based Rivertown Brewing more than doubling 2011 production

“I thought we’d do 500 barrels a year. We did 1,500 the first year, now we’re doing 500 a month,” Roeper said. The brewery has expanded from one 2,500-square-foot unit in a Lockland business park to four units, with 12,000 square feet and eight full-time employees with health insurance. The beer is distributed by Stagnaro Distributors in Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, Tennessee and southern Michigan.

According to the Brewers Association, Rivertown produced just over 2,600 barrels of beer in 2011.

Ithaca Beer Co. almost ready to open new facility to public

The company closed its tasting room on Elmira Road at the end of August and moved its staff to the new building, where it had started brewing in early July. But work continues on the new tasting room, beer garden, restaurant and kitchen. While owner Dan Mitchell described the actual opening date as a “moving target,” he hopes that the restaurant will be running by mid-October.

Boston-area’s Portico Brewing Co. gets off of the ground

The market was ripe, and the trio said “screw it” to internships, spending the summer of 2011 brewing and trying to come up with a name for their new venture. They landed on Portico Brewing Company, paying tribute to Rabe’s architectural schooling. In the world of architecture, portico is an entryway, and they thought the name spoke to the unassuming nature of their craft beers, which Rabe describes as “accessible to the everyday guy or girl who drinks PBR and wants to try craft.”

Heineken making switch to longneck bottle

heineken lager 100Press Release:

(White Plains, NY) – Today HEINEKEN USA, the nation’s leading upscale beer importer, officially announced that for the first time since 1946, Heineken has redesigned their world-class green bottle for U.S. consumers. The revamped “Star Bottle” is set to hit select New York State markets beginning mid-September, with a national roll-out slated to begin in March 2013 in on and off-premise locations.

“The newly designed Star Bottle allows Heineken to take a huge step forward in the globalization of the brand, which started with our ‘Open Your World’ marketing campaign and our more recent draught program,” said Colin Westcott-Pitt, VP of Marketing, HEINEKEN USA. “The Heineken bottle has gone through a number of progressions but has always maintained its core iconography that has become a symbol of upscale premium beer, and this philosophy will remain the same with the new Star Bottle design.”

The Star Bottle will be available in 12 oz. and 22 oz. sizes and features a taller, thinner shape giving it a more modern and premium look. The bottle also features an embossed thumb groove that improves grip and encourages people to hold the bottle at a lower point, keeping the beer colder. While the bottle is changing, consumers can still expect the same smooth, full-bodied beer with a complexity that balances fruity notes with mild bitterness that has been synonymous with Heineken for more than 100 years.

Odell Mountain Standard Black Double IPA returns

Odell Mountain Standard Double Black IPA

Press Release:

(Fort Collins, CO) – On September 22, 2012, fall officially returns as does Odell Brewing Company’s Mountain Standard. The brew, a double black IPA, was released in a four-pack for the first time last year.

Featuring hops grown on Colorado’s western slope, the brew blends a rich, dark malt character with a crisp and bright hop aroma and flavor. The bold combination pairs well with brined or roasted meats, sharp aged cheddars, or bittersweet chocolate.

Mountain Standard was a featured “Craft Beer of the Day” on Forbes.com. “For a brew that clocks in at 9.5% ABV, Mountain Standard Double Black India Pale Ale is remarkably tasty,” said Forbes contributor, Erik Kain. “It manages to be very strong and very delicious all at once, with a nice round flavor that lingers gently, leaving that perfect balance of bitter and sweet in your mouth long after you’ve drained your glass.”

The brewery will celebrate the return of Mountain Standard in the Tap Room on September 22nd, during the Fall Equinox. Guests can try the beer, and enjoy local food truck fare as well as live music by The Constant Tourists from 4 – 6 p.m.

Mountain Standard is available from September – January within the brewery’s ten state distribution footprint.

Founded in 1989, Odell Brewing was started by Doug Odell, his wife Wynne, and his sister Corkie. Twenty-three years later, the culture of family and collaboration still thrives fostering a brewery full of beer-centric people. It is this passion for beer that inspires Odell Brewing to create quality, hand-crafted, innovative brews. As a regional craft brewery, Odell Brewing is committed to serving the communities in which it distributes by sourcing local raw materials, and through its charitable giving program known as Odell Outreach. Odell Brewing was recently named a “Top Company of 2010” by ColoradoBiz Magazine and is an award winning brewery, nationally and internationally: 2012 Brewers Association Recognition Award, 2011 Great American Beer Festival® – gold medal for Friek. 2010 North American Beer Awards – gold medal for Woodcut No. 3. 2009 BrewNZ Awards – gold for 5 Barrel Pale Ale. 2008 World Beer Cup® – gold for IPA. 2007 Great American Beer Festival® – gold medal for IPA.

Allagash Brewing adding 75-barrel brewhouse to current facility

Within a week or so, (Allagash) is going to begin construction on a new 75-barrel brewhouse located in front of its existing plant, where there is now a parking lot. A new parking lot will be built on the side of the Allagash plant closer to Riverside Street. Tod told Collins that demand for the beer requires construction of the new brewhouse, and that the company plans to keep its current 38-barrel brewhouse in operation. Allagash has also installed a new bottling system capable of bottling 10,000 bottles an hour, although it is running it at 5,000 bottles right now because that is as fast as the manual packers can keep up with it.

21st Amendment Oyster Point Stout coming to cans in January

21st Amendment Brewery logo(San Francisco, CA) – Tucked quietly in an article about San Francisco Bay Area oyster stouts…

21st Amendment is putting its Oyster Point stout (made only with shells) in cans, which will be available in January.

Co-owner, Shaun O’ Sullivan, also clarified the nature of some recent label approvals for BeerPulse. They show 21st Amendment as the brewing entity producing the cans.

It’s an administrative change. We just changed to an alternating proprietorship license with Cold Spring. Before it was a straight contract, we bought the beer they brewed. It’s really no different now. We are brewing our beer there, but now we pay the lower excise tax on what we just produce. Before we were counted in with everything Cold Spring produced that pushed us unto the higher tax bracket so to speak. This really helps us out with keeping the margins in line.

Shipping Tips:

Here is a link to the Shipping Policy and list of states to which France 44 can ship beer.

Fill up your cart and then click on “My Cart” in the upper right corner. On the next screen (order screen), punch in your zip code in the Destination Zip Code input field in the lower right part of the order screen and hit enter on the keyboard. It will then calculate your shipping (without having to sign up or enter a credit card).

The optimal order where shipping cost is most efficient is 24 beers (or 48 or multiples of 24 from there). If you order a 25th beer, they have to add a second box which is an extra charge.

Mike Rowe’s “How Booze Built America” premieres on Discovery Channel next week

mike rowe booze showPress Release:

Mike Rowe is thirsty.  Really thirsty.  And after doing hundreds of dirty jobs, who can blame him?  In Discovery’s brand new three part series HOW BOOZE BUILT AMERICA, premiering on Wednesday, September 19th at 10pm ET/PT (and airing on the following two Wednesdays), host Mike Rowe takes a break from the dirty jobs…and takes a seat at the bar.

Did you know that the Puritans landed the Mayflower early on Plymouth Rock…because they ran out of beer?  Or that Johnny Appleseed was actually creating farms to sell hard apple cider?  Mike Rowe does, and he’ll walk you through all of this and more.  He’s proven that dirty jobs can be fun.  He’s ready to do the same for history.

In HOW BOOZE BUILT AMERICA, Mike Rowe will crisscross the country, stiff drink in hand and beer goggles firmly strapped on, to take an in depth and slightly unusual look at the story of our nation.  Between reenactments of actual historical events, and current day interviews with historians and experts, Rowe will make the case that alcohol is clearly one of the key ingredients that formed our culture and our country.  He’ll take viewers on a liquor fueled journey based on historical facts, such as:

  • Paul Revere actually rode from tavern to tavern on his Midnight Ride, and may have slipped in a few cold ones along the way
  • George Washington distilled his own whiskey, Thomas Jefferson brewed his own beer, and Abraham Lincoln sold booze out of his grocery stores prior to saving the Union
  • The Pilgrims gave beer to their kids – on purpose

From the Mayflower to the moon landing, from George Washington to the O.K. Corral, booze has been there every step of the way.  And that’s not just the liquor speaking.

HOW BOOZE BUILT AMERICA is produced by Karga 7.  Kelly McPherson, Emre Sahin, Sarah Wetherbee, Miriam Leffert and Jeanne Begley are executive producers for Karga 7.  Mike Rowe and Mary Sullivan are executive producers for mikeroweWORKS.   Craig Coffman is executive producer for Discovery.
