Leinenkugel’s Big Eddy Baltic Porter now available

leinenkugel big eddy baltic porter

Press Release:

(Chippewa Falls, WI) – The Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Company is rolling out Big Eddy Baltic Porter, a hearty dark beer with a clean lager finish, perfect for any beer enthusiast. Big Eddy Baltic Porter is the third in a series of Big Eddy brews by Leinenkugel’s in 2012.

Big Eddy Baltic Porter creates a warming blanket of malt flavor with seven select malts, including Munich, Crystal Rye, Roasted Barley, Special B, Chocolate malt and a blend of Pale malts. The beer is interwoven with notes of toffee, cocoa, caramel, toasted bread and sherry fruit flavors, creating a brew bold in character, yet remarkably balanced with an ABV of 8.5 percent.

Influenced by the melting pot of cultures and techniques from the Baltic region in the late-1700s, this Baltic Porter takes notes from the porters, stouts and Russian Imperial Stouts being shipped through the Baltic region from the United Kingdom and applies lager brewing techniques learned from Bavarian brewers.

“This brew is crafted in small batches to maintain the premium characteristics of a Baltic Porter,” said Jake Leinenkugel, fifth generation brewer and president of the Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Company. “Baltic Porter is a perfect choice for the cooler weather ahead, and it pairs extremely well with grilled red meats, aromatic North African cuisine, rich stews, toffee and cocoa deserts.”

Leinenkugel’s Big Eddy Baltic Porter features red and copper hues that shine through the dark shade of this opulent beer. As this Big Eddy warms it will open up to its full complexity and reveal its dark stone fruit notes of cherries, plums and raisins on top of licorice root, which adds a subtle sweetness to the aroma and adds a touch of spicy complexity within the layer of cocoa, molasses, toffee, plum and pumpernickel from the malts.

Inspired by the Big Eddy Spring, the lifeline of the Leinenkugel’s brewery in Chippewa Falls, Wis. since 1867, the Big Eddy series offers big beer fans complex, yet balanced flavors. Like its predecessors – Russian Imperial Stout, Wee Heavy Scotch Ale and the Imperial IPA – Big Eddy Baltic Porter ages and travels well.

Big Eddy Imperial Baltic Porter is available in limited release beginning in September 2012 in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, Georgia, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Washington D.C., Virginia, Kansas, Indiana, Kentucky, Texas and Arizona. The beer is available in four-pack bottles and on draft.

NPR: Obama makes play as being ‘regular guy’ using beer

There’s an old shorthand for likeability in politics: "Which candidate would you rather have a beer with?" Polls show President Obama has been winning that likeability contest. And he’s been raising a lot of frosty mugs on the campaign trail, hoping to press his advantage over the teetotaling Mitt Romney.

Captain Lawrence Brewing meets with upstate NY distributors

Scott also hopped a plane to Buffalo last week for what he calls an “exploratory venture,” meeting with beer distributors in upstate/western New York, and moving toward getting Captain Lawrence’s brews, such as the flagship Freshchester Pale Ale, the Captain’s Kolsch and the Liquid Gold, into our northern neighbors’ stores, pubs, restaurants and homes. Scott met with four distributors, and hopes to start distribution up that way next year.

Bill in the works to bring homebrews back to Illinois events

Tucked away in a Southtown Star article is some rather significant news about a push by homebrewers in Illinois to showcase their beer at festivals across the state. It’s something they’ve been doing for years – up until this year – when the Illinois Liquor Control Commission started cracking down on the practice citing laws that are currently on the books that allow homebrewers to share their beer in their home but not outside of it.

Brooklyn Brewery’s Oliver re-brews (and pokes a few holes in) White House beer recipe

Before I could start brewing, the recipe needed a little interpretation. The White House formula, while promising, is sometimes a bit short on detail. (Our emails to officials seeking clarification got caught up in bureaucratic channels last week, but admittedly the administration had a few bigger matters to deal with.)

Full Sail 25 Pale Doppelbock marks brewery’s silver anniversary

Full Sail 25 Pale Doppelbock Label

Press Release:

(Hood River, OR) – It’s been 25 years since Full Sail Brewing brewed up their first batch of beer and to celebrate they have crafted “25,” a pale doppelbock to celebrate this special occasion: the brewery’s 25th anniversary. The Full Sail crew invites you to join them in toasting to “25” in Hood River on September 27, 2012 at their Tasting Room & Pub at 5:00pm. At 6:00pm the celebration will continue with a toast and tapping of “25” and a showcase of Full Sail beers at Portland’s iconic Horse Brass Pub, a place that helped nurture and grow craft beer and Full Sail for the last 25 years.

“On September 27, 1987 we opened our doors to living the dream. A dream to open a small brewery that focused on quality, creativity, and authenticity. A brewery that we would run with respect for our employees, the environment, and our community. A brewery that reflected our deep respect for the art and science of brewing. So here we are 25 years later. Very humbled, grateful, and amazed that we got here in one piece. Still a mix of beer geeks and boardheads. Still independent. Still trying to find that perfect balance between art and commerce, work and play, inspiration and perspiration. We are very grateful to our fellow employee owners, our distributors, and our retail partners, all who helped to make our dream real and thriving for 25 years. And mostly, we are deeply grateful to every one of our customers who have toasted, celebrated, quenched their thirst, and enjoyed our beers over the last 25 years. We thank you all for living the dream along with us,” said Irene Firmat, Full Sail’s CEO & Founder.

According to Full Sail’s Executive Brewmaster Jamie Emmerson, “25” is a complex, luxurious beer brewed with Vienna malt and Saaz hops. Extended lagering produces full bodied flavors of caramel and honey with a hoppy backbone of white pepper and lemon spice. A beer made for celebration, Full Sail 25 is an elegant Northwest Style Pale Doppelbock. 70 IBU and 9.0% ABV. It will be available throughout their 25th year on draft and in 22 oz bottles.

“Next time you’re in Hood River, stop by for a beer, sit out on our deck, enjoy the amazing view, and toast to the next 25!” added Firmat.

Jester King Gotlandsdricka Ale makes U.S. debut in October

Jester King Gotlandsbricka Ale

(Austin, TX) – The latest from Jester King Craft Brewery, courtesy of a Monday afternoon email blast…

Gotlandsdricka, meaning “Drink of the Good Land”, is believed to have been the beer of the Vikings. Our rendition of this ancient style is inspired by the traditional farmhouse ales once brewed on the island of Gotland off the coast of Sweden. Gotlandsdricka (6.6% alcohol by volume) is brewed with birchwood smoked malt, juniper and sweet gale. It’s unfiltered, unpasteurized and naturally carbonated through re-fermentation in the bottle.

We don’t consider Gotlandsdricka to be a historic recreation of the style. Even if we intended it to be just that, it’s now impossible to experience what it truly tasted like centuries ago. From what we can gather, the original beer would likely have been smokey, sour and reeking of juniper and birch. It would not have been the product of fermentation with brewer’s yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) in a temperature controlled, sanitized stainless steel vessel, which is how our rendition of the style was created. Rather, like all historic beers brewed before the rather recent discovery and harnessing of brewer’s yeast, it would have been the product of fermentation involving wild yeast and bacteria.

We enjoy the “clean” version of the style and think you will too. However, we’re also interested in how the beer will present after having undergone additional fermentation with wild yeast and souring bacteria. We presently have a version of Gotlandsdricka that we inoculated with wild yeast and bacteria aging in oak barrels. If we’re happy with the results, we’ll release the soured version several months from now, once it’s ready.

The first tapping of Gotlandsdricka will be at the Borefts Beer Festival on September 28th and 29th at Brouwerij de Molen in The Netherlands. It will make its stateside debut a week later at the Texas Craft Brewers Festival in Austin on October 6th and at the Pints for Prostates Denver Rare Beer Tasting IV on October 12th. Following its debut at the festivals, a limited amount of naturally conditioned kegs, casks and gravity kegs will be released in Texas with a wider bottle release to follow. A portion of the bottle release will also be made available through the Rare Beer Club.

Ale Asylum opens new $8 million brewery

The new 45,000-square-foot brewery and tasting room [opened on Sunday 9/16] at Packers Avenue and International Lane. With the addition of about $3 million in equipment (and a $5 million building owned by CSI Construction), the new Ale Asylum is more than an expansion — it’s practically a new brewery. The new facility positions Ale Asylum to move from sixth in size among Wisconsin’s craft breweries to among the top three. It will add about 30 jobs, mostly in the new tasting room and brewery office.

New Belgium Brewing update: revenue, Shift, wildfire and water

new belgium logo

(Fort Collins, CO) – A hodge-podge of updates from New Belgium Brewing Company

A couple weeks back, multiple media reports shared that New Belgium was concerned about residue from summer wildfires contaminating the water supply it uses to make beer. Some context in this video…

Here is an update from New Belgium Spokesman, Bryan Simpson, as of last week:

Currently, we are using the city of Fort Collins’ main water supply, the same water all Fort Collins residents and businesses use. The city sources much of its water from the western slope and that source has not been impacted by the fire. Recently, the city started to draw waterfrom the Poudre River which does flow through the burn zone. During heavy rains, runoff from the burn will enter the river. The city will not draw water from the Poudre during those times. When the water is agitated, they can shut off the flow. They also have filtration systems in place to deal with any spikes.

New Belgium’s response so far has been to donate $10K to the restoration effort and create a contingency plan to test our source water independently. We are very confident the city will continue to provide the same excellent water quality all northern Colorado brewers have enjoyed for years.

Is New Belgium revenue growth trailing off?

One interesting side note from New Belgium CEO, Kim Jordan’s recent DNC interview with NPR was the reveal that New Belgium hit $140 million in revenue in 2011. Data from New Belgium’s 2009 appearance in the INC 5000 in shows that revenue grew from $84.6 million to $127.6 million (or 51%). Revenue growth in the two years since? Down to 10%.

New Belgium recently got a number of label approvals: New Belgium Imperial Coffee Chocolate Stout, New Belgium Biere de Garde and Trip Series Imperial Fresh Hop IPA.

More notably, one also just floated through for New Belgium Shift Pale Lager 12 oz. cans. The beer is currently packaged in 4-packs of 16 oz. cans and it has been a hot package in supermarkets this year (more on that this week). Is there a change afoot for packaging?

We’ll update as soon as we learn more about these labels.

Avery Brewing hopes to eventually can a session beer

We’re trying to find sub-4 percent ABV beers with a lot of flavor. The end goal is to can them, but we’re still in the proving stage of 3Point5. And as for the small stout, they haven’t even let anyone out of the tasting group try it yet," he adds.

The company also hopes to eventually can duganA Double IPA.

Denver Beer Co. expanding, adding barrel room

Denver Beer Co logoPress Release:

(Denver, CO) – Denver Beer Co. announced its appropriation of neighboring building space soon to be called the Barrel Room at Denver Beer Co. Sized at 1700 square feet, this annexation will allow the brewery to continue to expand its production capacity and will also provide room for a second, more intimate tasting room and event space.

The new Barrel Room will include a 1000 square foot bar area and tasting parlor. Separated from the main Denver Beer Co. tasting room, the Barrel Room will offer a special beer menu and approximately 45 seats. A rustic setting crafted from reclaimed and recycled materials, the room will be lined with barrels of maturing beer and patrons will have the opportunity to sample unique and limited edition brews. The space will also be available to rent for special events and parties.

“The Barrel Room annex and expanded brewing capacity will allow us to experiment with distinctive recipes including specialty IPAs, wood-aged beers and eventually sour beers,” stated co-founder Charlie Berger. “We hope folks will enjoy the intimacy of the new space and the adventurous beer menu.”

In addition to the new tasting room, this expansion will allow the brewery to add four 15 barrel fermenters and one 15 barrel brite tank. These fermenters join the brewery’s existing fleet of six 7 bbl fermenters allowing the brewery to produce up to 3500 barrels per year. Though the brewery still plans for the majority of its beer sales to occur on premises, expanded brewing capacity will allow Denver Beer Co. to distribute to more draft accounts at local bars and restaurants.

The annexation of the neighboring space marks Denver Beer Co.’s second expansion since opening in August, 2011. “With our extra 700 square feet of production space we’ll be better able to serve demand from local restaurants and bars.” stated co-founder Patrick Crawford. “We are thrilled by the support from the Denver community which has warranted this need for increased production.”

The Barrel Room is slated to open in early winter 2012. Denver Beer Co. is currently taking draft requests from local bars and restaurants for winter 2012-2013.
