(Boston, MA) – The Boston Beer Company’s latest trademark application filing went live this week…
“New Albion Brewing Company Ale.” The filing comes in the form of a label of the beer.
According to Senior Public Relations Manager, Jessica Paar, the company has no plans, at this time, to release a beer under the “New Albion” name. Rather, Paar explains that the filing is about preserving history.
“[Chairman, Jim Koch] took ownership of the trademark for New Albion in 1993 in order to protect the integrity of the first craft beer. To also protect the name of the brewery, we trademarked New Albion Brewing Co.”
Breweries re-creating old brands is becoming increasingly common as your editor noted in today’s piece about Celis (which admittedly isn’t about re-creation as much as it is revival).
John “Jack” McAuliffe started New Albion Brewing Co. in Sonoma, California, back in 1976. It didn’t last long but McAuliffe is credited with being the father of the craft beer movement.

Quit crafting your beer and just make a good down to earth beer like Sam Adams. All these new titles don’t make the beer taste any better. Sam Adams has the best as long as they don’t give in to the markets pressure to make big changes.
