Lithuanian court rules beer brewing ‘vitally essential’ to life

A Lithuanian court has ruled that the brewing of Carlsberg lager is a "vitally essential" activity, thereby depriving the Danish beer monolith’s workers the right to strike. The decision came after the brewer moved to prevent staff in its Baltic tentacle walking out in a dispute over pay and conditions, the Telegraph explains.

Mixed feelings, no?

  1. Very Mixed! As the Union rep notes, beer is great, but it does not save lives. Sounds like the government is once again mixing economics with biology and forgetting that the welfare of workers is also important. To make a sound judgement, I’d want to better understand the demands of the workers, but it’s unlikely that they would strike for anything less worthy than the brewing of beer. What would happen in the US if Miller Coors employees decided to strike? Just a thought…
