Oskar Blues Brewery to can spirits, likely starting with whiskey (video)
Oskar Blues spokesman Chad Melis says plans are for a distillery to be up and running by this summer. The Times-Call reports the stills have been ordered and the federal licensing agreements are in process for Lyons Soul Distilling LLC. One of its first products will likely be a whiskey.

So once I pop a can of whiskey, I have to drink all 12oz at once? What?
Frank Reynolds’ wine in a can was genius. Now whiskey? I’m gonna get really depraved now! Salt the Snail!
Eric — who is forcing you to drink all 12oz?
First of all, whiskey in a can is clearly novelty. It’s obvious intent is for a party (or a lonely Saturday night). Nobody is asking you to consume the entire container, that’s merely what it’s sold in. If you only want a sip, buy another containment vessel to put the remaining liquid into when you’re done. The world doesn’t owe you a thing. You’re not entitled to sealable whiskey containers. And if you think the whole notion of canned whiskey is silly, then DON’T BUY IT! This is a company putting out a product and it will succeed or fail based on market consumption. Meat is packaged in MULTI-POUND containers at the grocery store — should you eat 37 hamburgers in one sitting? Of course not. You own Tupperware and plastic wrap and have a freezer.
About a year ago when that Panamanian company was first rumored to release canned whiskey, people using your argument made my head explode. Listen… **Substances don’t abuse people, people abuse substances. You cannot legislate good decision making**
If you would like to consume 12oz of whiskey in one sitting, at home, or out with friends, you need to take the proper precautions for doing so. At home? Don’t drive anywhere. Out with friends? Better have a DD elected. And I know what your response is — “Well, we need to protect people from themselves/people are too stupid to ‘xyz’ …” If you treat people like children, they will act like children. Getting shitfaced by myself or with friends off canned whiskey, and NOT DOING ANYTHING DANGEROUS TO OTHER PEOPLE doesn’t make this product bad.
You can’t preemptively punish people for things YOU just PRESUME they will do.
Might it be a can of their distilled whisky mixed with cola or something like that? Might make more sense…
Thumbs up Starks. I know ill be giving it a try
@Starks: Whoa, calm down. I’m not saying people shouldn’t be allowed to buy whiskey in a can, I just don’t see the market for it.
Yes, you can buy another container to store the remainder in, but then why not just sell it in a resealable container to begin with? This just strikes me as gimmicky.
@zach: That seems more sensible. Somehow, though, Oscar Blues doesn’t strike me as the type of company that would take a page out of Smirnoff’s play book and sell mixed cocktails.
I’m quite calm. Secondly, it IS gimmicky and they know it. When you get a second, make a U-turn and keep an eye out for the point.
Hey hey. everyone. stop acting like BA asshats.
Heheh, you said asshats.
Christ, Starks, you just start and finish an eight ball?
Just want to say that Starks sounds like an employee/or brewer…whiskey in a can will fail once the gimmick wears off, their beers are amazing so they should bottle their spirit’s there is no advantage to canned spirits in comparison to canned beer, actually, there is a clear disadvantage…. Great PR though.
Josh, it’s pretty clear you didn’t read a word I wrote. I’m sure you were ‘too busy’ to read and formulate your own opinion. Had you read my response, I said exactly what you just stated.
Canned whiskey is a gimmick — but it’s up to the consumers to NOT buy it, and let it fail on it’s own lack of merit once.
