Blue Moon Dark Chocolate Bacon Porter among three finalists for new fall seasonal

(Golden, CO) – Blue Moon Brewing announced earlier this month the three finalists for its Pick the Next Blue Moon beer promotion. The winning beer, to be early this spring after a series of tastings, will be launched as a fall seasonal on August 31st, the next lunar blue moon.

Here are the three contestants:

Blue Moon Caramel Apple Spiced Ale: A blend of cinnamon and nutmeg combine with roasted caramel malts and fresh apple juice for a warming, spiced taste.

Blue Moon Blackberry Tart Ale: The aroma of rich blackberries sets up the slightly sweet yet tart taste that’s balanced by the subtle malt character.

Blue Moon Dark Chocolate Bacon Porter: This deep mahogany colored ale is brewed with hickory-smoked bacon and dark chocolate for a slightly sweet yet savory taste.

A month of tastings begins this weekend, primarily in Wisconsin, Illinois, Tennessee and Florida. Presumably, an announcement is expected sometime after the final tasting on March 31st.

  1. I think that is the least likely of the three mentioned to make it, but still I have to (and hate to) admit it, but I am a little impressed with Blue Moon’s ingenuity. I do not believe I have seen such attempts at creativity from Blue Moon, since Blue Moon was one of the only Belgian Wits available in the US, which was before my beer nerd days, so I guess I have never seen such things!….. It still all boils down to taste of course….

  2. No, no, and no. They should do a fresh hopped harvest wheat ale and release on September 22, the first day of fall…

  3. Not a huge Blue Moon fan, but I wouldn’t mind trying all three, though the dark chocolate bacon porter interests me the most. However, what happened to that peanut butter blonde they were releasing last year?

  4. I understand that Coors is trying to compete in the craft beer market by trying out experimental recipes that they originally created. However, I need to address this one issue. Prism Brewing Company from North Wales, PA was the first brewery ever to combine bacon and chocolate into a stout / porter style. This is a fact having been one to try the first batch created. I would recommend trying the Insana Stout to anyone who may be intrigued by what Blue Moon/ Coors is going to imitate. If you enjoy different styles of beer, supporting small American owned business, and American owned ingenuity, try Prism Brewing Co.’s Insana Stout. They were also featured in Draft Magazine and were at GABF 2011 with that same beer. The last thing we need is another large corporation bullying a small business because they are desperate for more quality concerned customers.
