Report: some ‘Gluten-free’ beers are full of it

UPDATE: Here is a link to the report. The researchers did not specify what beers they tested (pdf).

Because existing tests for detecting gluten in malted products are not very accurate, the research team developed a new test that’s highly accurate for hordein.

They used this test to analyze 60 commercial beers and found that many of the regular brands contained significant levels of hordein.

Eight brands labeled "gluten-free" did not contain hordein. However, the researchers were surprised to discover that two of the brands labeled "gluten-free" actually had about as much hordein as regular beer.

  1. As the push for Gluten free beers continues I thing that will become more of an issue. It will interesting to see which brewer is able to come up the a true “gluten free” beer that is full of flavor.

  2. Actually, the two brands were labelled “low gluten”, not “gluten free.” They are the beers that are brewed through normal processes and then have the gluten “removed”.

Most likely one of the two was Estrella Daura, but I don’t know what the second brand might be.
