(Bremen, GERMANY) – Beck’s Beer has been using Andy Warhol’s face on advertisements around NYC according to the ArtInfo blog…
The Andy Warhol Foundation has licensed a lot of crazy products in recent years, from “Warhol Factory X Levi’s” to the “Andy Warhol Men” address book, but seeing the artist’s face on the side of a bottle of beer is a first.
One of the late pop artist’s “fright wig” self-portraits is being used to advertise Beck’s beer in NYC. The touted Warhol label is part of the German brewer’s long-running “Art Label” program (Beck’s celebrated 25 years of art labels earlier this year with an arty pup crawl in London).
Pretty soon, Andy Warhol’s face will actually start being featured right on the bottles. Not just one face either. Many.
I can’t say that seeing any of those pictures on the bottle would entice me to buy Beck’s.
I’ve seen the ads for months now – one appeared at my subway stop a while back. ‘Putting the art in beer’ or something to that effect. Major suppliers trading on craft-like ideals (art, authenticity, local…). Not surprising, but I find it tough to swallow anyway.
