He’s baaaack. Back in April of 2010, I posted a video of Grant Curlow’s most impressive beer cellar.
Curlow’s done a little work since then.
Just a little.
If your beer cellar is better than Curlow’s, send the video (needs to be high quality) and I will post it.
Wow someone has a lot of extra money! Very impressive.
this cellar is actually quite awful if you know anything out beer
what a d*ck, all that beer and it’s most likely gone to waste. nobody can drink that much beer and not all of that is going to last 5-7 years, chances are it will go bad… and to take all that beer from other people taking away other enthusiasts opportunity to taste it…. it’s a shame. if you want to collect, buy wine, beer… is for sharing. if you want to age, buy 1-2 bottles, don’t buy 20
Crazy, I would be dead in a weak off the sours alone!
I am most curious what this guy considers his prizes in there. I know what I think are his greatest and I noticed he pulled a few bottles out to display the label but that does not mean those are his favorites, he could have done it for mere clarification.
weaksauce. 🙂 spend some more time on photog skills and get some portable lighting if you are going to truly flaunt it. I have way more FouFoune
I actually know Grant personally. The cellar is amazing. He is a beer specialist for World Class Beverages and honestly, he shares that beer like crazy. It is nothing to hang out with a bunch of people and go through 8-10 bottles with a decent group. I would in fact say he is very very generous with his friends and co-workers. Beer is really his passion. Not all of it will last 5-7, but a lot of it will. Some of it could last 10-20 when you are talking the real high end sours and fruit beers. Half the fun of cellaring is seeing how things change over time. That is the whole concept behind a vertical. From working in the beer industry, you would be surprised how inexpensive it is to get a hold of some of these things. The relationships within the industry give you access to a lot of great beer.
I’ve seen a beer cellar similar to that here in Colorado. Back in 2009, a guy who used to be in charge of the beer department at Liquor Max in Loveland had quite the collection in his basement. He ended up throwing a huge party and welcomed dozens of local beer geeks to partake in dozens of bottles in his collection. We all chipped in to the donation collection for the beers we drank. He had quite the stash as well in a temperature controlled room. His intention was to collect and share and then collect some more. He knew how to throw a party. I took some video of his collection but it was not in HD so the quality is also a bit off. He took a particular interest in dark beers and had a lot of imperial stouts including Dark Lord from 3Floyds as the guy in this video did. It just boggles the mind how someone can stash away that much good beer (not to mention the cost) but then again, if you have connections I suppose you can get stuff at greatly reduced prices.
Dave- I think I know the guy you’re referring to. Either that or someone very similar; I know/knew the guy who owned the store and had a wicked cellar. There were plenty of nights there would be 4 or 5 of us going through 10 or more bottles. Very generous.
Either way, if I had a cellar like that, I’d do what the guy in this video does: share like crazy. Beer is meant to be shared. My extremely limited cellar causes me to hoard a little more, but i never open a bottle without someone to share it with.
Nickd: don’t be pretentious. That’s for wine.
Those Cuvee des Champions are much better fresh as is the Fou Foune. Some real nice lambics in that collection though. I will say I prefer pics to video, the videos feel more pretentious and it’s hard to see the fucking beers with shitty lighting.
You know I love aging beers, I love sharing beers. But never would I take that many bottles out of circulation for my own personal satisfaction of vertical tasting a bottle for 5-10 years to taste the nuances, particularly if it’s a limited release, a beer that some people don’t even get to try because of the limited amounts of bottles.
Keeping or buying 20 at a discount and keeping it from even hitting the shelves so that you can taste a couple every year and share it with your closest buds is nothing but selfish. Even if he’s sharing it, he’s taking it for his own cellar and then sharing it with whomever he chooses. What about those who aren’t Grant’s friends?
You know what a awesome beer cellar looks like? 1-2 bottles of each rare beer. I don’t care if people collect 100’s of bottles of different beers, but to simply “stockpile” it?!?!?.. come on bro. I mean look at all that Dark Lord! Talk about hoarding. Nobody needs that much Dark Lord, even if you’re sharing it!
Am I jealous? Of course. It’s a beer cellar every beer geek wants. Just cut back your allotment of beers you take off the shelves for other beer nerds to be able to get their hands on it.
I’ve traded with this guy and he gave me some crazy extras… it all makes sense now!
All that beer and $$$$ and I didn’t see any Rare, Coffee, or Vanilla Bourbon Country Stout. Weird right. And only 1 bottle of BCS, come on! With all that extra beer, he should throw a birthday tasting and crack half his cellar for his boys.
That guys backs out of trades like there’s no tomorrow when you have something set up and a better deal comes along. Poor form, really.
Not bad. It would take something quite extraordinary to top the mind-numbingly impressive cellar of Chris Lively in Lovell, Maine though.
Lee, Truth. Nothing really compares to Lively’s cellar at Ebenezers. He makes Grant Curlow look like amateur hour.
That’s why I posed that it could be top 10. Lively needs a new hi-res video of his cellar.
Anyone know what vintage is that bottle of Ice Mountain?
Adam, yes just noticed it said top ten. Fair point.
I’d like to see some videos of some European cellars.
Billy Sysak’s cellar is pretty outstanding. As far as hoarding, what ages, what doesn’t blah blah. 99% of this is in the palate of the beholder. Beer is meant to be drank, if it happens to be shared hooray. If not too bad. If Grant share’s his beers (which he apparently does) more power to him. If he chooses to open and drink an ounce from each dark lord and pour the rest down the drain, more power to him.
This video was not high quality and it was posted. Not impressed at all compared to mine. When I throw a party I crack almost half my cellar or at least a quarter of it in one night and I share it with everyone that attends. Stop hoarding and pull the trigger on ’em already!
You can’t take it with you…
@Patrick-no doubt. he can do whatever he wants with the stuff. @geuzehawg-sure, the FouFoune is tasty fresh but after a couple years I would call it outstanding, just in a different way.
By high-quality I mean just not all herky-jerky, grainy, etc. Doesn’t have to be professionally produced.
Re: Euro videos (and American videos)…send ’em in, guys! I will have time this weekend to take a look.
That is an impressive cellar! I am surprised at the amount of negativity in the comments though. (mind blown by the magnums of russian river!)
I, for one, can’t possible be mad at this guy…I could never afford all this! Yet.
