Straub Brewery files trademark application for “Fiercely Independent”

When Terrapin Beer Co. converted a loan from MillerCoors’ Tenth and Blake into an equity stake, there was naturally some buzz in the craft beer community including this tweet from Stone Brewing:

Damn right! RT @StoneGreg: The @StoneBrewingCo is, & will remain, fiercely independent.

Sierra Nevada and Dogfish Head also used the phrase in a press release announcing the Life and Limb collaboration.

Well, Straub Brewery loved this phrase so much, they recently filed a trademark application for it. If all goes well with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, Straub will have a registered trademark for “Fiercely Independent” sometime next year.

Straub currently doesn’t meet the Brewers Association’s definition of “craft,” according to the year-end New Brewer report. That said, the organization has multiple points of criteria with “independence” being just one of them.

  1. I understand that Straub uses Rice in their brewing but they are definitely independent. There Peter Straub Special Dark is a nice gateway beer for the MillerBudCoors types
