Was 75 Minute IPA label surrendered due to Johnny Cash’s likeness?

UPDATE: Yes…or Groucho Marx (google images).

(Milton, DE) – As Rick mentioned in the comments of the first piece about the Dogfish Head 75 Minute IPA label being surrendered, it’s missing a UPC code and it may be as simple as that.

Or maybe we should consider what went down this year with the Harmon Killer Brew label. In that case, a story published here about a beer label went mainstream after it was passed along to CNBC reporter, Darren Rovell. It caught the eye of Harmon Killebrew’s trust and the label/branding of over a decade was nixed.

Who else has a trust?

Johnny Cash. That’s who.

Is it possible that the trust reached out to the brewery after the recent press about the beer being bottled? Or perhaps the brewery thought twice before the trust did?

The best evidence for this is the removal of “Johnny Cask” from the original artwork and the addition of a humorous disguise put on Mr. Cash (see the original artwork below). The use of Cash’s likeness in the artwork has some relation to use of “Johnny Cask” in marketing the beer.

Pulled from an old DFH press release:

Johnny Cask has entered the building! We’ve retrofitted a 15 barrel tank to perfectly produce a very special cask conditioned ale (so, we have a little time to play around during winters at the Delaware coast). This beer, known as Dogfish Head 75 Minute IPA is a blend of 60 and 90 Minute IPAs with a special whole leaf cascade dry-hopping session. Post-hopping the beer gest transferred into firkins and dosed with fresh yeast and maple syrup from the ole family homestead […]

If we see the Johnny Cask items disappear from Dogfish Head’s online store, I think we’re onto something.

Otherwise, at worst (and this is my speculation only), I think we’ll either see the brewery commission musician, Jon Langford, for an alternative piece of artwork or the brewery might switch gears and use artwork similar to its other “Minute” IPAs.

Or as Commenter Rick suggests, maybe we just care too much.

But this little thing called craft beer wouldn’t be nearly as fun if we didn’t.

Again, stay tuned…

  1. How is the 75 Minute IPA label different re: likeness issues from NEBCo’s Imperial Stout Trooper? Don’t Groucho glasses fix everything??

  2. Heh, very similar actually. Forgot about that one. If they went through the trouble of doing the 750ml copy, I think they’ll go through with it. I was able to confirm w/ a rep that a 750 label has not yet been resubmitted though so they may be at the drawing board right now.
