Massachusetts breweries push for changes to antiquated law
Recall the news from early August in which Massachusetts regulators issued an advisory proposing significant (abrupt) changes to how rules around brewery licensure is interpreted. Local breweries are taking the subsequent public outrage and running with it.
Small brewers are hoping that a recent controversy over proposed regulations requiring craft beer brewers to grow or purchase 50 percent of their raw materials from local farms will swing public and legislative support to their side, as they seek legislation updating the state’s wholesale distribution laws. Jim Koch, founder of Boston Beer Co., which produces Sam Adams, and Daniel Kenary, the cofounder of Harpoon brewery, joined other brewers and industry advocates yesterday for meetings with lawmakers, including Senate President Therese Murray.
