Asheville councilman: No incentives for New Belgium
Another piece of news on New Belgium. So far, we have been told by local news outlets that there are six locations in four cities. Asheville, North Carolina is one of them. The Asheville Brewers Alliance says that it doesn’t want New Belgium to get any incentives. After all, none of the brewery members did. At least one city council member has their back:
Davis tells Xpress that “I’d love to have New Belgium here. I don’t think it would hurt the economy particularly; it’s going to create good jobs. I’m not really in favor of incentivizing that. I think that’s an issue. They’re a well-off company, nobody incentivized Oscar Wong [founder of Highland Brewing] or anyone like that.”
Hurt the economy? It is interesting to see New Belgium portrayed as if it were a Wal-Mart-level entity. It is not as if New Belgium is in the business of selling soap at the lowest possible cost. And it wouldn’t be surprising to see a New Belgium Eastern HQ creating half of the 280 or so jobs that come out of the existing breweries in Asheville.
