Beernews.org Redesign

redesigned-575

Hopefully this will answer your questions.

UPDATE: There are a couple bugs mentioned out there already. The slider links for one and the Twitter follow widgets, too.

Why the change?

It was necessary for a lot of reasons, the paramount one being that I needed to drastically change the layout to cater to what will be shorter posts and other briefs. Rather than wait one or two weeks to do a ‘beer notes’ article, this layout makes it much easier to see a bunch of updates each day. The info will be that much more timely and comprehensive, too.

Is this Beerpulse?

Not exactly. It’s only 30% of the way there. I had to do a lot of the development here myself over the past couple weeks. Rather than try to take a home run swing like a flailing ignoramus and launch a whole new site, I’m choosing to do the reasonable thing which is to roll out changes often and get feedback. This will completely morph into my vision for “Beerpulse” over the coming months.

But what are the new tabs on the navigation menu?

Home page: Top stories of the day or past two days / new beer label approvals of interest
Unfiltered tab: All stories from the past day or two
Beers tab: Most recently added beers (label approvals mostly – this tab displays all approvals though only some will appear on Home)
Beer notes and Press Releases: These tabs will probably disappear at some point.

But where did the other stuff go?

Anything that you don’t see was irrelevant and/or outdated with the exception of the ‘Buy Beer’ page which will return sometime this weekend.

But why is there like…no beers on the beers tab?

It will take time to enter this stuff in. I’m going to start with the most recently added beers and go from there.

Also, the beer and brewery “posts” are very much in beta so they will look relatively empty for the time being.

But you made the RSS feed a summary instead of a full post?

It’s because I want people to re-visit the site and have a look at the new changes.

But you made it easier to read your site on my mobile phone?

Yup.

But when will we see new posts?

Later this evening/tonight.

Should I let you know if I see a weird error or something that seems off?

YES. And general feedback on the changes is welcome at [email protected].

So how can I help?

I can ALWAYS use a free hand with development stuff and can now use a free hand with people wanting to add beer/brewery info, too. My paypal email address is [email protected] if you want to donate a little something. Businesses can get in touch with me about advertising through [email protected].

But I HATE the changes!

Cheers!
Adam

  1. The upgrades look great. I’m sure it takes a lot of work to make something like that happen. I liked to visiti the site to see all of the new approved labels and since the change I don’t feel like there are as many. Am I missing something?

  2. Why force RSS readers to come to the site? Congrats on the work, it looks good. However, your RSS consumers don’t care about your new layout or we wouldn’t be RSS readers to begin with. Are full feeds coming back at some point or not?
