(Petaluma, CA) – Lagunitas Brewing keeps truckin’.
Lagunitas, Stone, Abita, Brooklyn and Dogfish Head are among the breweries that surpassed the 100k barrel production mark in 2010, putting them in an exclusive class. According to brewery founder and owner, Tony Magee, production grew to 106k barrels last year, a 38% increase from 77k in 2009. Just two years ago, Lagunitas was south of 60k barrels. “We were brewing at a pace of 147k barrels in December and we may top out at a rate of 170k barrels by the end of the year,” says Magee.
When asked why the brewery was doing so well, Magee cited consistency in quality and fair pricing. Though the brewery is currently analyzing what drove last year’s growth, Magee offered a couple anecdotes: 40% growth in its chain stores and 100% growth in Chicago.
How will the brewery continue to support that level of growth? Magee recently published a message on Twitter that the brewery received a reduction on the interest rate for its debt financing. A little cash flow goes a long way as the brewery is in the process of expanding to a 250bbl brewhouse.
Magee confirmed rumors about the new offerings, noting that Lagunitas is still dialing in the recipe for the new A Little Sumpin’ Stoopid Ale. He was non-committal on what the other “Little Sumpin’” offering will be. Very pleased with how the original A Little Sumpin’ Ale turned out, the brewers will continue to work new recipes around it as a base beer. Magee also confirmed the return of Wilco Tango Foxtrot.
