Surly Overrated West Coast IPA label approved for 16 oz. cans

Surly Overrated West Coast IPA

UPDATE: Some are wondering whether this beer is the same as Bandwagon IPA, a beer exclusive to Target Field, home of the Minnesota Twins. According to Brewmaster, Todd Haug, this beer is more or less different from Bandwagon IPA with a brand-new hop for the brewery.

(Minneapolis, MN) – On Thursday, label approval came in for Surly Overrated West Coast IPA. On rare occasion, labels that get approved may never make it to market but it is the exception rather than the rule. So, there is a good chance that Surly has a new 16 oz. can coming out in the future though details are unavailable at the moment. Below is the label copy…

It’s been said, “It’s easier to brew an extremely hoppy beer than an extremely balanced beer.” And you know us, we are always looking for the easy way out, so we jumped on the West Coast IPA Bandwagon and brewed this dry and hoppy ale. “Surly’s a little bit of a one-trick pony, they just brew gimmick beers,” and maybe we are OVERRATED, but at the end of the day, it’s just a beer. If you like it, great, so do we. If you only liked us when we were small, then leave this one on the shelf. Let one of the fanboys grab it.

We dug around for a source to what appears to be a chip on Surly’s shoulder but couldn’t come up with the quote on the label.

But there was this Beer Advocate review by member, BeerLover…

[...] i dont wonder with “surly’s “Our Sh!t dont stink, we are better than every1 else’s) attitude if this is not just a marketing trick/ploy/gimmick to make their already high in demand beers even more crazed over [...]

And this one by JamesMN

[...] I tend to think that Surly is a little overrated (due mostly to the high price point and the “we’re better than you” attitude). [...]

Who knows…maybe your comments may someday upset a brewery into releasing a new beer.

  1. thats one ugly can…
not sure how many time have I heard Omar say Furious is like a west coast style IPA

  2. Your copy is off. Read the label again: “It’s easier to brew an extremely [hoppy beer easier than an extremely] balanced beer.”

  3. Surly has a West Coast IPA called Bandwagon that’s only available on tap at Target Field in Minneapolis. This sounds like a way to sell it in stores while still having it “exclusive” to TF…

  4. Just sounds to me like a way to package Bandwagon outside of the Twins Target Field. You guys are over thinking it.

  5. @Wook, considered that angle, too. Couldn’t find the ABV on this label to match it up against Bandwagon. And the marketing angles on the two beers are quite different. But thanks for bringing that up because I ultimately forgot to before publishing.

Very surprised Surly would do something like this. They look like jerks coming up with this. Yeah, like the other person said they are following FFF. First, they steal the DL Day idea complete with death metal (which, come on, if you are 40+ and you listen to death metal you have ISSUES) and now the FFF attitude. I’m assuming it’s Haug who is responsible for this – Mr. I have Grey Hair and Play In a Death Metal Bad.

  7. @Planceot23 Seriously? Little about this comment makes sense to me. The concept is clearly tongue-in-cheek and a bit clever to say the least. As for the personal attack on Todd, it makes you look intolerant of human beings, in general, which kind of disgusts me. Is your expectation that as people grow older and ‘grey’ that it is more appropriate that they derive their excitement from say, crossword puzzles? Haug spends a large part of each and every day doing something that makes thousands of people happy. Kudos to him. I’m sure that he had to put in a ton of hard work to get where he is today. I love my readers but damn!

  8. FFF, Surly, Stone, Lagunitas. It could be argued that they all have a little “attitude”. It’s tough to argue that they all make great beers. Get over yourselves and enjoy life a little, people.

People who read blogs about beer, and esp those who comment, must have a little attitude also. Self included.

Please feel free to boycott or slander or whatever it is you do. I’ll be drinking some great beers…without discriminating against the people who are providing me with this service.

Are we seriously criticizing the name of a new beer? Seriously?

  9. A little disappointed that none of the hands is throwing a shocker. Can’t wait for another sure to be tasty beer from Surly!

  12. Love Surly, but what’s with all the shitty clip-art they keep throwing into their designs lately?

  13. I am looking forward to it! They brew a good beer and I think the attitude is young in cheek. Don’t take a beer can so seriously people! Enjoy life, and beer!

  14. I’d say NOT liking death metal if you are over 40 means you have issues…but hey, Budweiser has you Nickelback fans covered, so Surly can keep cranking out the good stuff for the rest of us!
