Shelton Bros. President on NY situation: I’ve received threats and been called the antichrist

Remember Tuesday’s post about the Shelton Brothers case that ended up potentially costing New York breweries millions each year? Encouraging to see the Wall Street Journal pick up the mantle from us lowly beer bloggers…

"My goal was always just to get the label fees knocked out because there’s no reason for them," he said, adding that his company works in 45 states and New York’s registration charges are the most onerous. Mr. Shelton said he had been hoping to join with New York’s breweries to work to repeal the law. Instead, he said he received threats and was called the Antichrist in at least one email.

  1. Interesting read. Do all states have label fees? I think PA does but do others?

$150 per label per year certainly does seem high. For Barrier Brewing with its 42 varieties with a total brewing of 500 barrels (barrel = 31 gallons ?) it would be an added $.04 per 12oz bottle (back of napkin math… might need more coffee).

  2. PA does, it’s 75$ per label or you can get a bulk rate of 150$ for 20 labels as long as the beer is brewed in quantities of i believe 150bbls per year or less.
